Posted - 18/09/2010 : 17:18:51 Hi everyone,
I found this forum about a month ago and have been lurking here ever since! :D It’s a great resource….I’ve learnt so much about Corn Snake care so a BIG thank you to you all!
About 10 days ago, OH and I bought 2 adult snakes. We intended to buy one, for my belated birthday present, but we fell for two different ones and decided we have the money and equipment for two, so we went for it!!!
We’re not new to pet keeping - we have a household menagerie of two lurchers, two rabbits, two fish tanks (one marine, one tropical) and I kept leopard geckos when I was younger. I’m really excited to have snakes….always wanted one!
So….snake number 1. 6 year old male corn snake - I’ve named him Jasper. Just to add a little serendipity into the matter, it turns out he shares my birthday!!!
Snake number 2. Also a 6 year old male, corn snake x rat snake (I believe the previous owner said he was a cremsicle….hmmm…can’t spell that can I? Sorry!) OH has named him Zeus.
(Just to clarify, they are in separate vivs!)
We left them alone for just over a week to settle, and then fed yesterday. I’m happy to say they both fed well….and are now sleeping it off in their respective hides :D
I’ll get some photos when we get them out to handle in a couple of days time.

Hmmmm......Bit of a mixture probably...we're both going to be responsible for handling/feeding/generally looking after both snakes, although Jasper is 'oficially' mine and Zeus is OH's. |

gingerpony - There have been one or two interesting moments but the rabbits are outside and very well fenced off from lurcher jumping!
kellog - there is an awful lot of conflicting info out there! But with a combination of this site, lots of questions and common sense I'm hoping I'll get there!
I have a sheet set up to log their feeds, sheds etc....I read on here (might even have been one of your posts!) that a lot of people do that and it's very useful.
I'm waiting for the addiction to kick in....what's one more viv eh? lol |

Posted - 19/09/2010 : 04:52:10 Hi Evie, it is really good that you have finally joined us officially after lurking in the shadows for so long ! You will have seen what a great forum this is, with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship .
You have obviously already browsed the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. The best place to look is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133
You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.
Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! You have probably already found the first place to look - the search button. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
I am not sure if you have thought of doing this, but I keep my own 'Snake Diaries'....noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!
What a wonderful birthday present....and a great compromise, instead of having to choose 1 you just got both !! It sounds like Jasper and Zeus are settling in well....so glad you knew to leave them for the week and even more glad you know to keep them in separate vivs !! I bet you were very pleased when they both fed....amazing to watch, isnt it!
Unwritten forum rule - pics as soon as possible! This link will help - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14.
A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You have just started down that corn path with 2 already, so be warned!!
