Hello to you and fluffy
Kellog Posted - 14/06/2010 : 02:37:15
Hi Karen and Fluffy, it is really good that you both have joined us! This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . And not only will you find that you have joined a group of people who love snakes, but a lot of the forum members own beardies too....so you are not alone there .

As you have had Fluffy since March, I am sure you already know most of this info....but it is always better being reminded of it than not hearing it at all, so checkout the best place to look for corn snake care, which is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm. You could also have a look at this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133

You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.

I am not sure if you have found this with your beardies, but unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!

I am not sure if you have thought of doing this with Fluffy, but I keep my own 'Snake Diaries'....noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

Unwritten forum rule - pics as soon as possible! This link will help - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14. I hope you will put up pics of your beardies in the 'Other Reptiles' section as well....you need to show them off !!

A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You have started down that corn path so be warned!!

hello to you both,

fluffy is a great name for a snakey, i just got a hatchling, they are so beautiful.
my 'so called friend' at work, takes the mickey out of me having snakes, lizards and ferrets, people think she is funny taking the pee out of me as i'm not normal to them, but, i don't think they are normal if they only like cats and dogs and no other animals. i like frogs and sharks too :)

I am also new, to the forum, but not at having a snake. So hello.

Snakes are awesome, also, you don't have to keep weird insects alive to feed them which is a bonus. Unfortunately they have such a bad reputation. I honestly don't understand why people are scared of them, because they are so cute. As a snake owner the most frequent first questions I get are:

'Does it bite' and 'Is it poisonous'.

Ah, 'No' and, uh, 'NO'.

Frankly, to start with, this is just rude. My snake is a she, but no non snake owner never asks, as, apparently, snakes are genderless. I bet if you called someone's dog an it, they would flip out. Also, I have been bitten far more times by people's dogs than I ever have by my snake. I have had my snake for 7 years now and she only bit me once by accident when she thought I was the mouse that I had stupidly dropped in her viv. Also, snakes are relatively easy to look after (depending), don't smell, they only eat once a week (ish) are perfectly happy to be left alone but also appreciate cuddles....

I could go on, but I realise that sort of turned into a rant when it was really meant to be a 'snakes are awesome, welcome to the snake world' post. By the way, I have nothing against dogs, I just thought it was a good example as lots of people have dogs as pets, but they seem to overlook snakes as pets. I actually quite like dogs, just not as much as snakes.

So, in summary:

Snakes are awesome, I love snakes, Congratulations on getting a snake :)

PS: My other favourite animals include frogs and sharks so I'm not really all that conventional a gal...
