I have been in that situation as well!

The other thing I find when students write into work is that they write how they speak...

This is an opening sentence that I remember from two years ago

"Deer Sir, Madem,

I have like lost my student fare card somewhere like..."

I honestly was shocked!

I would like to add that

Txt spk iz lik wiked init I soz dntz undrsand y peepz gt soo uptit bout it init blud

ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Danny, it is 'I have' not 'Me has' )

I has 2 ....as a few of my friends have found out and now I can send long texts with real English! You think my essays on here are bad you should see my texts !!

Seriously though, it does help....especially in my situation where I dont see people much and am often too tired to talk to people on the phone, so sending someone a text just keeps me in touch and also lets people know that you havent forgotten about them - that means a lot .

Try having a look at this Angela, has helped me out once or twice! http://www.sms-text-guide.com/sms-text-language.html

'bbe' is babe.. some people can't be bothered to add an a..

I hate text talk.. OK maybe when I'm trying to send a big message to shorten into one message istead of 2 with about a word on the other text (10p a text!) I might slip a few in but IMO it's common sense to type English.

some people moan when they see immigrants speaking their own language, it's like text talk is a whole language on its on. Maybe people I know that don't like immigrants speaking their language are text talkers.

I hate it when my mum texts me and she uses text talk. It results in me asking her what the hell she put sent which either results in being sent the exact same message again or a "nm". It drives me nuts. I wonder if people send their CV's in text talk :/ I know some people have started using it when writing exams :/

I find i actually type quicker on my laptop when i don't use text speak. Although some may slip through.

text talk in general was previously used to put as many words into one text on a phone as possible, generally by removing the vowels. for the most part it is difficult to read. lol and lmao and words like that were more widely used on the internet in chatrooms and such. so text talk is more likely to look like "c u l8r bbe" persoanlly i mix mine up but if someone speaks in all text talk it woulkd take me a long time to figure it out

I think one thread on the topic is plenty. Personally, I have an education so am quite happy to use the language properly.
herriotfan Posted - 13/05/2010 : 10:07:44
LOL Kellog, love the last posting re Cambs uni!!!!
I tend to use a mixture of both, although if push came to shove I'd be old fashioned and use 'proper' words. I think a lot of the time it depends who I'm talking to.....if it's my younger friends I'd use text-talk more.
This could turn into a good debate, maybe it should be started from scratch as a new topic

Our brains are actually able to work out most words no matter what order the letters are in if they are the correct letters.......

My husband put lol at the end of an email to a female work colleague and she went MENTAL. She read it as 'lots of love' instead of the 'laugh out loud' he meant it as. It's easy to misinterpret electronic communications when you don't have the person's facial expressions and body language to back up their meaning, that's why we have emoticons to help. Shortening stuff that doesn't need to be shortened just adds in that potential for misunderstanding imho.

(imho = in my humble opinion). See, I'm not really THAT old and can use some limited text speak. In fact I've had to learn it since being on this forum. Quite a lot confuses me but I find if I wait someone else will probably ask what it means. I worked out sxc, never heard of bbl and bbs and still no idea what bbe means.

When an entire sentence gets cut down to about 5 words each one containing no more than 4 letters, THEN it gets irritatinghard to read.
Kellog Posted - 13/05/2010 : 04:35:51
I corrected my daughter's spelling on Facebook of 'Gawjus' once....you can imagine her reaction !!! Luckily I have a couple of friends who are also friends of hers and they are always picking her up on her grammar and spelling - in a fun way that she likes....cos its not her mum doing it!

Sta~ple - sxc is sexy - bbl is be back later and bbs is be back soon....but no idea about bbe

Dont stress about it JJ....just occasionally a few of our older members get a bit stressed about this type of thing! Just their age showing ! Your posts are sometimes a bit difficult to make out but always worth reading !!

There has been a few posts made recently that have been virtually impossible to read - cos of text speak and just not trying to write properly ....now that makes me mad (and not a lot makes me mad)!

In this day and age stuff is spelt differently and some of it is ok - I use 'cos' instead of 'because' and will also use lol...and when I text will use text speak but will try and spell proper words properly!

What we have got to remember is that sometimes people post in a certain way because of certain reasons - but others do it cos they dont give a damn and cant be bothered to type properly !!
