The pic size is fine, I tend to resize my photos to 800x600 or there abouts, it's still a decent size but hopefully shouldn't cause to much sideways scrolling.
A small amount of sideways scrolling IMO to see nice piccys is normally tolerated a bit more than wide sigs, because wide sigs cause every thread to spread out.
I myself had to be careful because I can't tell if things are to wide sometimes either, my screen resolution is 1280x1024 on this machine, so is more awkward to tell.
