Posted - 18/11/2009 : 23:38:42 Some of you will remember that I have been dealing with Shen the non-eater, who first went on an 8.5 weeks long hunger strike and then needed assist feeding. At 3.5 months old this snake weighed 8 grams, and it took him 5 weeks of assist feeds to put on 3 additional grams. However, tonight, at the end of 7 weeks of assist feeds, I finally have some good news.
Tonight's feed started like all previous feeds with him: an attempt to feed normally failing, followed by getting the pinkie into him assisted. However, seeing how fast the pinkie went down once it was in Shen's mouth and how he was behaving right after, I decided to try something. Got a second pinkie from the freezer, defrosted it as fast as possible, and offered it to Shen at the end of tongs. It didn't take too long before, and for the first time ever with us, this little snakey pounced on the pinkie and got hold of it. Yes, Shen has finally taken a pinkie, un-assisted.
This was also the first time he took two pinkies in one meal. Now I'm hoping that next time he'll take both pinkies without need to assist, and then I'll know I'm done and we finally have success.

Cant wait to see what happens on his next feed. When will it be?

It was yesterday evening. When I put him in the feeding box he seemed frantic and didn't even look at the offered mouse. Eventually I picked him up and was holding him real loose, wasn't anywhere near his head. He calmed down immediately, noticed I was dangling a pinkie at him, and grabbed it. Put him back in the feeding box to let him get on with it which he did, and when it was time for the second pinkie he took it off the tongs immediately, no problem.
I think the days of assist feeds with him are finally over.
That is excellant news Hawkeye...does sound like he is really learning how to feed properly. Well done.

Hawkeye...that is fantastic, and well done for taking the initiative and offering him that 2nd pinkie. The Hawk must be so pleased and relieved. You have been through such a tough time with Shen and you have stuck with it and learnt what you needed to so you could look after him correctly instead of giving in. He is lucky to have such a stubborn owner!! I know you never gave up hope and you are an inspiration to other owners.

How can I refuse such an invitation. Ok, come to Phil's later on, I'm more into public executions than private impalings.
