Posted - 05/09/2009 : 23:43:47 Thanks HannahB, my faith is who I am and it is a case of take me as I am or dont. But I hope I live a life that shows my faith without me bashing people over the head with my bible. To be honest I have got so ill I can hardly read bible now and havent been to church regularly for over 2 years, but my faith has got stronger and stronger. Its hard to explain and hard for anyone to understand who hasnt actually taken that step of faith to believe in a living God yesterday, today and forever. I am interested in the buddhist part of 'taking part in a long silence where the entire duration they have no contact with the outside world'. It can be hard being a Christian in the world we live in and sometimes you just want to hide away and have no contact - but if you have no contact you cannot make a difference in peoples lives, be it just helping them, being a friend or coming alongside them and bringing them to Christ. That is what we are here for. Sorry, I have gone on again havent I!!!! You really shouldnt get me started!! xxx |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 20:58:26 buddhism is a fascinating religion and having been lucky enough to see the Dalai Lama when he came to nottingham it definately gave me something to think about.. one of my philosphy and ethics teachers was buddhist and every summer he goes out to a monestery somewhere (cant remember where) and takes part in a long silence where the entire duration they have no contact with the outside world or eachother.. they see eachother of course but dont say a word.. hearing his thoughts about the world was inspriring aswell |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 20:12:45 I dunno, my neighbour kicked my little kitten over the fence one day, I hate him...
One thing I've always wondered is, how can we know we were made in God's image when no-one (to my knowledge) has ever TRULY met him? I totally believe in evolution- it has been proven than whales evolved from land mammals, so I have no trouble accepting the theories that we are evolved from apes. However, I do believe that there is something special about humans, and our intelligence.
though, as I've already stated, I have nothing against religous people as long as they dont adversely affect my life with negative or arrogant attitudes. after all, I dislike being told I'm going to hell as much as the next person! but kellog, I LOVE your open attitude towards dino's and evolution- as paul has, I have met some really closed-down people when it come to even DISCUSSING dinosaurs etc.
if I had to pick a religion, I would be a buddhist! |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 11:29:01 Its good to discuss it with you Paul, because you do seem open and accepting of my view and I certainly am of yours, which is what a discussion should be like. Often in the bible you come across stories that some Christians take as truth and others take as a way God has explained something in a story. That is what I believe about the creation of the world - I dont believe it happened in 7 days and I believe that He could certainly have created dinosaurs and evolution as part of his process. What I cant answer is where we as humans have come from because I dont believe we came from the apes but were made 'in Gods image', which I know sounds like a contradiction to what I just said but I am a Christian who admits to not knowing all the answers. I am sorry the session you went to was so hard hitting, it certainly shouldnt have been said like that. As far as God is concerned you are forgiven your sins when you repent, and you definitely should love your neighbour (in other words, all around you). You may not like or accept what they do but that doesnt stop you loving them. xxx |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 08:17:27 It's a good thing that you are as open-minded as you are Kellogg. I have a friend that is a Christian but a borderline "ram it down your throat" christian. I won't say where she lives or name names because that would be unfair to her. We went to a museum near where she lives and she was fine whilst we were looking at all the historical artifacts as far back as the romans but, when we came to the prehistoric section she went into complete denial. So much so that she became quite vocal about it. Her argument being that because it wasn't mentioned in the bible it can't be real. My girlfriend at the time and I went to one of their meetings and spent the whole session being preached at by some self righteous idiot who spent most of his time telling us that we had led a bad life and had sinned pretty much constantly since the day we were born. Two problems I have with that. 1) He had never met us before......ever and 2) The bible preaches forgiveness and that people should love each other (yes, I have read it )so why was this numpty going on like that?
Another point that I raised during the debate at uni that once again couldn't be answered was "Who/what made the big bang happen?" and "who/what put the stuff there in the first place?". Once again science cannot provide an answer. This isn't just me rambling on, for a change , but based on the opinions of a much respected Professor of Cosmology/Philosophy/Theology.
Once again, please don't take this as me knocking you or your faith Kellogg because I genuinly am not. I really believe that if people can discuss the whole issue sensibly then the world would be a much happier place. |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 04:37:06 I certainly am not one of those who disbelieve in evolution, but feel it happens for a planned reason. If you look outside of evolution, at just the different stunning morphs we find in corns - I cant see those amazing colours and patterns without believing that they were designed by 'someone', they didnt just happen by accident. Also agree with what Paul said, there is something within us as human beings - our personality, our spirit, our soul, whatever you want to call it - that cannot be explained by science and that disappears when we die....but where does it go? I also would like to seperate between religion and faith. There is much wrong with all religions, which are too often pointed out by the press. Religion is more the traditional binding that holds people of a same belief together, but that doesnt necessarily mean they have a real faith, a living faith. I am a Christian, if I had to box myself into a religion I would say C of E, but I dont like to. I believe in a God who created the world and continues to do so, a God who is in my life today and not just a name in an old book. Our world is so amazing, with new creatures still being discovered, and I cant look around at the simplest little bluebird to a weird sea creature without marvelling at their maker. Sorry, didnt mean to go on.....hope you dont think I am one of those bible bashers SB! Just tried to explain myself and got too involved! Apologies! xxx |

rs and philosophy and ethics were my favourite subjects at gcse and a level and i looooove learning about other peoples opinions and beliefs and the theories about what/who created us and why and other stuff |

Posted - 04/09/2009 : 23:10:52 I did type a long old reply earlier then lost my connection and the reply . The long and the short of it is that science cannot explain the human personality. Sounds like an odd statement but there is no biological reason why we have individual personalities so you may have the last laugh yet Kellogg. |

I cant stand people like that! They are totally out of order for doing it and gives Christianity a bad name. Most of the time they dont know what they are talking about! I have my faith and it keeps me strong, but I would never consider discussing it with anyone unless they asked me. I hope that people will learn from me by the way I live my life, not by me shoving the bible down their throats or hitting them over the head with it! So I apologise SB on the way you have been spoken to. I am all about love and compassion!! xxx
I have noticed Kellog, you seem lovely, and I mentioned how considerate you are to my oh the other day for always asking permission for including people in your prayers. good for you! keep up the good work with your Faith. |

Posted - 04/09/2009 : 20:00:38 cool cheers. tbh I can see were people on both sides of the "religion" coin can come from. like paul, I cannot believe in a "Creator" who made the world, I'm too scientifically minded and love studying evolution. I am not religious in ANY way, but i have absolutely no problem with someone who draws strength and happiness from Faith.

I respect you opinion and also the strength of your belief in your chosen religion so please don't think I am knocking what you. If your religion gives you strength then it's working. I have the age old problem that a lot of scientists have with any belief system. I have friends from pretty much every religious belief on the planet and we have debated the whole thing many a time. The funniest ones we have had are those between myself and a friend who is a creationist. They usually end up with us both in fits of laughter.
I think that this world would be a sad place if it wasn't for people making us laugh about the sorry state that this planet is in. |
