Posted - 23/08/2009 : 02:54:20 i went into my local pet shop yesterday to pick up some fish and turtle food and order up some rat weaners.
this shop does not really sell reptiles but they do have an carolina, and a green water dragon and some turtles in the shop. they also stock and sell heat mats, lamps, aspen etc.
just out of curiosity i thought i would great a price of them for thermostats. (not that i need any at the minute)
the guy in the shop pondered for a moment and said. well there are different prices depending on the size and pointed to the heat mats.
i said no i looking for the thermostats, you know what you use for controlling the temp of your mat or lamp.
his reply was "OH RIGHT, CAN YOU GET THOSE SEPARATELY? I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!"
IDIOT! now i could maybe understand if he was only new to the shop, but he is not. He has worked there for years, his mother owns it! |

Posted - 24/08/2009 : 11:22:17 They wouldn't have to drug them really- I've heard that some people get away with selling nasty snakes by keeping them cool. They aren't as feisty when cold
I think it's a constant battle with silly shop owners- they will always be pet shop owners that don't know their stuff as there will always be really knowledgable ones too and forums like this to give proper advice |

Posted - 23/08/2009 : 22:43:10 Is there some official body that you can report pet shops to? I guess you need to subtly gather as much evidence as possible before reporting them - hidden camera, microphone......ok, maybe that is going a little overboard but you know what I mean! Think that if we know a shop is dodgy we should do what we can to get them shut down - for the reptiles and other animals sake. xxx |

I really cant see that being the case, though some shops will cool some animals so they dont show aggression. |

Posted - 23/08/2009 : 22:09:32 Have you thought about telling RSPCA about the shop spor? If it was the son of the owner then he should have better information to tell a reptile buyer and it is very worrying about what state the reptiles are in the shop if that is the response you get. xxx |

Posted - 23/08/2009 : 03:49:46 Its kind of worrying. The sort of guy who would sell you a white lipped tree viper and tell you its safe to handle because he hasn't got a clue! Makes you wonder how he hasn't manged to "FRY" the critters he has in his shop!
