Posted - 21/08/2009 : 11:17:27 Ok. So my son has had a moment of clarity in his hunt for his first car and decided that he wants an old beetle. Is anyone on here a bug fanatic that is willing to have their brain picked on a regular basis?
Cheers in advance. |

I see adverts for them in the last few pages of the freeads all the time, they have their own section; 'escort agencys'. |

See. That's what happens when you chop 'em in half and glue a bike to the front |

Posted - 21/08/2009 : 21:30:15 Beetles are superb, but only the older ones. The floor rusts out on them as well, so be careful with that.
I prefer older ones, got my '76 bike and '78 MG, I'd love one of these though: http://www.seriouswheels.com/1950-1959/1954-Sunbeam-Talbot-Alpine.htm not necessarily that year, but THAT model. it's never gonna happen though. |

Posted - 21/08/2009 : 19:19:00 some beetles are quite nice when there done up, but i imagine it`d be hard to find a decent one that isn`t rusted like a sieve, with any old car of that age you either spend loads on a good one or buy a cheap one and spend loads to make it good.
106 can be a good starter as well but they rust as well - inner front wings and boot corners are usual, same with saxos (i got one)
i`d say if you can afford it, golf or polo maybe, something that wont fall apart as your driving along!! |

Posted - 21/08/2009 : 11:45:15 I know. They have so much potential for customizing. The one we were looking at on ebay needed too much work that I couldn't do in our garage to get it mot'd.
He's been looking at peugeot 106's and the like so we sat him down and showed him a few in the magazines that I have (currently planning a camper myself). Me and the Mrs are both total gearheads . Our dream car is a Dodge Charger . Need I say more.
Explained to him that he would probably have to keep it standard for the first couple of years to get the insurance down and then slam it, custom paintjob, etc. Just gotta check out the legality of bobcat exhausts cos we both saw a Baja bug and were grinning like cheshire cats. |

Posted - 21/08/2009 : 11:24:15 awesome cars, but like any classic, you will be paying through the nose for one in tip top condition. watch out for rust in the wheel arches and under carriage, coz its nigh on impossible to stop. |
