hi everyone. my name is stu and i have a big problem. my friend has just given me his corn snake and i dont think he has been handleing it, because everytime i try to go near it, the snake strikes at me and bounces around the tank. he feeds all time and he isnt shedding. wot can i do? |

hi every1. thanks 4 all ur tips and suggestions. i will do everything that was said. i all ready put 1 of my t-shirts in the tank and he seems 2 be in it all the time. its feeding day tomorrow, so i will let him eat and go from there. quick question, wot tempertures do u guys have 4 ur hot and cold spots? at the mo mine r hot end 27 degress, cold end 25 degress, with a ambient temp of 26 degrees. these r day temps. by night i drop it a couple of degrees at each end. is this the right temps? |

these replies are brilliant tip's Stu; patience and persistance is key. you'll win him over soon, it happens just overnight with many snakes. then you'll have a soppy snake like many of us on here. :)

He has got to get used to you just as you have to get used to him. Give him time, sitting with glass door open letting him get your scent, changing water every day and straightening viv but making sure not to make any sudden movements or go close to him. He needs to gain your trust, you have no idea how he was handled before so he might be nervous for a reason. Take the advice given here, these guys know what they are talking about. xxx |

Hello Stu.
Sounds like you have one on your hands like my Matilda (ASBO corn). I've had her since november last year and she is getting better but still has a long way to go. As previous posts have said check you temps, etc and also look at the diet. Matilda was being fed a small rat every 14 days by her previous owner but her behaviour has improved considerably since I changed that to an xl mouse every 7 days instead. The clothing thing works too. A couple of tricks I use are opening the viv on the side where she is hiding and just sit there for 20 - 30 minutes talking to the snake. Calm voice and no sudden movements. Don't attempt to pick him up until he approaches you otherwise you will destroy any trust that he has built up. Another trick that I use is when Matilda is bagged during viv cleaning. Once the viv is cleaned and set back up I don't put her back in straight away. I carry the bag cradled in one arm, like you would a small dog or cat, and don't put her back for about 15 - 20 minutes. I'm no expert and I'm still learning things every day but these tricks do seem to be working. We're down to one glove now when I initially get her out but can handle her without gloves once she is out. She hasn't had her ASBO revoked just yet but she's not a psycho any more.
Just be patient and stick at it and he'll get there  |

i think the snake is about 1 an half yrs old. the last time he shed was 3 weeks ago. how often should he shed? i have had him 4 about 2 weeks. does he need more time 2 calm down? |

i stu,it's likly to be like that,just give it a good settling in period and then you can work on the hadling.My mexican black king was like that when i first got him,he was a right nutter.very viv defensive.Once your ready for handling try letting it come out on its own then gently support it's body then lift him once out,you could wear cloves for this as it will give you a bit more confidence.Also try leaving a worn t shirt of yours in there so he gets used to you scent |

Hi Stu welcome to the forums.
When you say he isn't shedding how long has it been since his last full shed?
Is the viv set up properly with adequate heat and cool ends with plenty of hides on both sides?
How old is the snake?
Also if you've just got the corn have you left it for at least a week for it to calm down and become accustomed to its surroundings?
You can try the usual stuff like wearing a glove for an hour or more then put that in the viv so it gets used to your scent. Otherwise you should put a thin glove on keep giving him short sessions of handling until he becomes accustomed to it. |
