Posted - 16/07/2009 : 09:42:31 Places like B&Q have machines that do lovely smooth cuts - if they mess it up it's easy you don't pay for it. If you need to cut it yourself the general rule the smaller the teeth on the saw/disk the smoother the cut will be. Hope that helps. |

Posted - 16/07/2009 : 00:03:05 My ex hubby made my viv with conti - it has no crappy edges, I think it's something to do with the way you cut it, but he's the carpenter not me lol. I'll try and remember to ask him for you when I see him, I have to admit my stack looks really smart, he did a smashing job - but def go for conti over mdf. |

Posted - 15/07/2009 : 23:01:48 cheers for all the replies Only reason I was asking is I wanted to see if there was anything other than conti-board to use, as I am afraid if I get it cut at b&q for example the cuts might not be clean, ie bits of the melamine chipping away leaving crappy finish. Anyone had any cut and had this problem?? |

Posted - 15/07/2009 : 20:55:31 I wouldn`t use mdf. It is banned in a lot of places around the world as the dust can cause cancer. So if you do cut it you should cut it outside and wear a mask. |

Posted - 15/07/2009 : 20:12:31 Best thing for making a viv is normal 'Furniture Board' or 'Conti Board'. It has a chipboard core and handily has a very tough water resistant melamine coating in a variety of colours. White, Beech, Oak, Ash etc.
Same stuff that most furniture and kitchen units are made from. All DIY syores will stock differing widths from 6" up to 2 foot.

Posted - 15/07/2009 : 13:26:35 It can bow under weight, and absorbs moisture. Make sure you seal it (varnish) and if you're cutting or driling it, make sure you have alot of ventialtion. |
