Retics in the phils often grow to over 18ft in the wild and take goats and wild pigs. There are also stories of farmers and children being taken by these snakes and even though they are rare (due to habitat destruction) there are still areas where they can be found in large numbers. I wouldn't one as a pet as you can't handle a full sized adult and you'd need a hell of a large enclosure to keep one properly. This one is in Bohol...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9986rsR7vM
oops...the reason for my post and link is my wife is pinoy and we have family their.....But its the Cobras you really have to watch out for and they are dead common ( I still love them though). |

thats sad for the parents, but like said above, it could have been easily prevented with a secure viv and better keeping. |

i mean a female burm can get 20+ft i seen 22ft i beleive (died the day after i saw it  but it was being fed pigs!! could easily take and a 2 yr old and i judt dont think that people appreciate how big animals can get. i "live" at my local rep shop and in the past 4 weeks 7 ppl have brought in igs saying that they cant handle the size now. so frustrating. and tizzy i totally agree some sort of permit should be required to keep large snakes and reps |

And my Hubby wonders why i wont let him have a retic.....This makes me worry enough about having my 2 dwarf Boas (5 and 6 feet long) around with young kids.
I also believe that this snake must have been teased, under-fed or something to react like this but that doesn't take away from the fact a small child had been killed. I think people should have the right to keep large snakes if they really want to, but should have to gain some kind of qualification first to ensure they know what they are doing. I also think all pets should have an animal MOT for their own saftey, if you don't want to pay £20 for a check up once a year you shouldn't have the pet! |

Should have been locked up, Mattys bang on with that one. Cash is only dinky on the snake scale of things but has a lock to keep him in and I always double check it.......sad story indeed |

a snake wouldnt just kill a child for no apparent reason, unless the snake see the child as prey. or the child was toying with it which made the snake constrict in a defensive manner. either ways the owner should have been more responsible |

Yes, but there wont be much strain on the lock from a snake pushing the glass. I would of thought their heads were to broad to push the pannels of glass anyway. |

awwww thats such a horrible story and i feel sorry for the young child that died and the mother of this baby, iv always said any snake that grows to that size should NOT be a family pet,
theres no way you can blame the snake for what its done it done what it would do with any pray no matter what it was, its just a huge shame that they lost a baby to a animal that should be kept in a zoo where its size can be catered for |

Lol I wonder if the girl had teased it before and it got its snakey revenge :P
Seriously though, some viv locks would have prevented all that and I would have thought it obvious to put some on when the snake can be classed as a hazard. |
