Hi all! :)

Got some bad news... :(

I may be getting rid of my corn snake due to the fact every time i try to handle it, it shoots off quickly and tail vibrates (Sounds like a helicopter in my room) I have no idea why she is doing this because i always was my hands with soap and cold water so she cannot mistake me by a mouse...

Anyway back to the topic, its got me down as i was excited to have her etc, and it isnt a deffo decision we are going to speak with the shop owner.

But my dad said he may buy me a royal in replacement of the corn :)

Regards,
Blake

it doesnt really hurt, like matty said its the shock of it really.
although i dont plan on getting bitten again tho lol

It has a mouth, why cant it bite?

Doesnt hurt apparently, the teeth are to thin and sharp its more of a shock than pain.

Don't give up on her if you have only had her for a month, she needs time too. Hope things get better soon.

My friends corn snake tagged me yesterday, its 4 years old so much bigger than my own corns, it was my own fault though as i was holding her hamster just before so i deserved it. Anyways my point is that it wasnt that bad at all, tbh im more scared of my ferrets they give one hell of a bite when they are in a bad mood.

hopefully everything goes well..
tbh getting tagged off a wee hatchling isnt sore at all
think of the size of them.
jst give her a chance
my jorgia was crazy wen i first got her.
tagged me soo many times.
jst keep handling it tho :D
xx

Good news, fed her two mice instead of the one on wednesday, hopefully that might calm her down she could have been hungry (naughty me!)

Also she did the tail rattling thing whilst eating and didnt strike, she tried to move away so i dont think she will tag me, touch wood!

also read a thread somewhere else on here, it could be because of the heat also.

i'll keep you updated on how things go!

Blake

My corn has recently started doing the same thing. She used to be fine being handled but something must have spooked her because recently she seems really unimpressed by me trying to pick her up. I got tagged by her for the first time the other day and to be fair, it wasnt that bad.

What i've started doing now is making sure she knows im there before attempting to pick her up. I place my hand gently in the viv, close enough to her to make her take interest, but not close enough to panic her. If i leave it there a while she tends to calm down and come over for a bit of an investigate and then she seems far calmer when i pick her up. I think it's just a case of being patient with it, mine has good days and bad days, but im hoping soon she'll be used to me handling her again.
Good luck

I have a corn, and she sounded like a pneumatic drill when she rattled her tail...

spent loads of time with her, always making sure she knew i was there before getting her out,

couple of months later and she now handles like a dream..

it just takes a bit of time and effort and you have a great snake..

warning if you want a snake to handle then a royal is not for you..

i have royals and i only handle them once a week, for a maximum of fifteen minutes. very occasionally i may do twice, but that is normally when i am cleaning them out.

They are not really snakes that tolerate handling and as Ali says it takes very little for them to stop feeding..

they in my eyes are not good first time snakes despite what people say, to many ifs and buts with them..

Again, perseverance.

Did shop tell you it was handled every day??? If so i'd take that lightly, most shops do not have the time every day to give each rep a decent 15 min+ handling session.

It does sound nervous more than anything, if it's more so when it's in the viv, make a snake hook to help ease it up a bit and keeping the business end away from your free hand until snakie is out.

just perseve with the corn build your confidence up dont worry bout getting tag because you are not a real rep keeper until you get tagged.(im still not a real rep keeper nearly two years into the obsesion still no bites)

had it for exactly 1 month tomorrow.

im not scared of snakes at all. i'll try upload a pic of me in sri lanka with a nice sized python :)

its just the tail shakin' and not wanting to get bit i'll just be a maniac like my mate and put my hand in grab her and pull it out...

she never does anything then apart from "Oh look im being handled"

and yeh i sometimes take my time trying to get her, and no its a sliding glass door :)

how long have you had him? he might be nervous about his new surroundings.

and what is a 'tag?' sorry, i'm not as experienced as most of you.
sexychef Posted - 01/07/2009 : 17:56:21
sorry if you have answered this before but what sort of viv is your snake in. can you only gain access via the top?
HannahB Posted - 01/07/2009 : 17:21:58
dont give up on the snakey..are you hesitating when you put your hands in?the more you hesitate the more it will continue to tag and tail shake.. dont give up though..it will be worth it one day :)

hatchling/juvie doesn't really make much of a difference hun................ advice would still be the same

and cumbrian eejit is still having the micky taken about his marigolds................. you'd better did them out again scott, you'll need them, lol
SexyBear77 Posted - 01/07/2009 : 16:01:14
ooh i have just thought watch this, its a video of my corn doing the same thing, youre not alone deary..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zclIBYoPAVw

not a good idead, if you can't handle your corn dont get another snake, let alone a royal. Its getting rid of a dog that growls and replacing it with a pit bull- pointless and a bit stupid.

dont mean to sound rude but ALL snakes will probably be difficult at some point, and corns are super easy...
