Posted - 13/06/2015 : 17:19:49 My little niece is nearly 3 years old. My sis and her husband took her to the zoo in my home town - and the zoo is situated on a really, really steep hill, with the reptile house on the very top.
They were worried she won't be able to walk all the way up, and will be whinging on the way....until they told her that all the snakes are at the top of the hill. She RUN all the way up, and then they couldn't get her out of the reptile house
All the other kids were going " yuk " when they saw the snakes, but my niece was laughing and laughing, and they couldn't get her away, and she was not interested in the monkeys at all. Her favourites were Milksnakes, because of the bright colour, but the biggest favourite was the anaconda. She watched the snake swim, and was telling everyone that it's blowing bubbles in the water
Seems to me she has inherited her love of snakes from me

Posted - 13/06/2015 : 22:27:10 Thing is, she would have only seen my snakes once or twice, on Skype, as they are in another country...my sis likes snakes, but my brother in law hates them, he won't even go in their friends flat, because they have two royals. Although, when they came to visit few years ago, he did actually hold Seb, after he saw my sis holding him, and said Seb wasn't as bad as the royals :-) |

Posted - 13/06/2015 : 21:12:11 Probably due to the influence of your family. I'm terrified of spiders, and I think a large part of that is that my mother was terrified of them too, so it was a learned behaviour. My aunt kept garter snakes and I used to play with them as a toddler, so I have always loved snakes. Had she kept tarantulas and let me play with them, but been scared of snakes, I have no doubt it would have been reversed. I have no fear of cockroaches, stick insects and other creepy crawlies because I never had a negatve experience of them as a child, so as an adult faced with the opportunity to handle them I was left to form my own opinions and found them not so bad (although centipedes scare the bejeezus outta me, because a book I read as a kid featured centipede aliens that ate each other. Despite being more knowledgeable now I cannot shake that memory every time I see a centipede). |
