Some of you may have heard of the TV show "killer kareoke". In that show, contestants are presented with several challenges during which they have to keep on singing, no matter what. As usual, the Netherlands weren't far behind in buying the rights to host their own version of the show. This is one of their "awesome" challenges:

http://www.rtl.nl/xl/#/u/05c64d6a-b7d6-454f-aa1f-281d2a5799d5/

In it, the contestant is dunked into a tank of ice cold water... to which, LIVE snakes of various species are added. Not only are the poor creatures tossed into ice cold water, they also have to deal with a flailing contestant and no way to get out of the water (until they are taken out afterwards).

From what I've heard (but that is hearsay only) the TV channel claims that everything was supervised by experts and that it's by no means cruelty.

What do you think? Is it alright to expose snakes to this kind of stress? I know this might lead to a bit of a heated discussion as it appears to be a controversial subject, so I'd like to ask everyone to keep an open mind towards other peoples' opinions and stay respectful (although I don't expect to have any trouble with that on this forum, the people here are amazing :)).

Don't think I could watch that one, the american one I saw had me cry. It's more the fact there is so many snakes in such a small area that cannot escape that upsets me the most.

There was a petition against the American version of the show.

lol.. I wonder what torments they would think of for us...
quote:

So your challenge today contestants is to swim from one side of this pool to the other, but wait there is more... We're going to fill the tank with wailing flailing naked apes that you will have to avoid if you want to reach the far side and your prize...

*no naked apes were harmed during the filming of this episode, all animals were supervised by the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Captive Apes)

The dutch version of the show is also hosted by someone who was supposedly good with animals...

Reading more on the subject has revealed that they contacted tons of snake keepers and reptile shops to see if they could use their animals. Those people told them, time and again, that doing something like that would not be right and cause a lot of stress for the animals. They ignored all the warnings and kept searching until they found someone who would actually let the show use their snakes...

Wow.

This was brought up a while ago on our Facebook group with the American version of the show. There is a Facebook group trying to get the show stopped https://www.facebook.com/AnimalAbuseOnTrutvsKillerKaraoke

I only managed to watch a tiny bit of the link when it was put up....and I don't plan on going through that again with this link . That ANYONE can think this is ok just saddens me....but doesn't surprise me at all .

What REALLY gets me cross is that the American host of the show, Steve-O, has been involved with a documentary profiling three animals who either escaped or were rescued from factory farms....giving the impression he cares about animals now and is supposedly an 'animal advocate' !!

Just not fair to cause distress to animals for the sake of "entertainment" seems pretty sick to get a program out of this. Well done for reporting it lets hope something is done!

Personally I'm really glad that the girl didn't get bitten - not for the girl's sake, but because it would probably be blamed on the snake and be used as yet another argument to ban reptiles as pets...

if i could swear on here i would. Just no need. They should make it interesting and use Venemous snakes and see how much singing goes on then.

I echo everyone else sounds cruel to me.
Razee Posted - 15/05/2013 : 17:45:04
IMO it IS cruel - a cold blooded animal, ice cold water.. etc. I bet there would be many more complaints, if, instead of snakes, someone tossed in a lot of cats, or dogs... makes me angry. Hopefully, if enough people complain, it might be stopped. Fingers crossed.

Definitely sounds very cruel to me - I'm glad they have had so many people complain already, hopefully that means it will be stopped from happening again :(

On a sidenote - I've alerted the dutch government department on animal abuse of this. They replied and promised to do a thorough investigation on the case. From what I've heard, more than 200 people have already contacted them, so that's positive.
