I was walking past Sheldon's viv this afternoon and just happened to notice his temp at hot side was up at 37.5 degrees, I immediately checked Sheldon as he was at hot side thankfully all was fine, I have a microclimate ministat 100 and it was set at around 29 degrees and an exoterra digital thermometer. I can never seem to get temps settled but this is by far the highest it has ever been, it is usually between 27 and 30 degrees. I have turned down the thermostat to 23 degrees and the thermometer is still showing the temp at 29 degrees, help!! |

thanks guys, its reassuring to know i'm not the only one it's happened to. nothing had been moved at all and the mat was really hot to touch!!! got a really big fright but just glad Sheldon is ok, had him out for a bit last night and he's still as active as ever and really noticing him filling out a bit too. played about with the stat a bit and temp is now between 27*c and 29*c so happy with that. here's hoping it doesn't happen again. so glad I have this forum or I would be completely lost.  |

I had exactly the same thing happen Lindsay, although the temp hadn't gotten quite so high. In my case it was because Kellog had moved the mat stat probe  , so it was reading the ambient temp rather than the temp of the heatmat, so it thought it was too cool and kept heating the mat up. Luckily the thermometer probe was still in place, reading the temp of the heatmat, so I quickly saw there was a problem and put it right.
So glad Sheldon is ok, must have been a real fright for you  .

My habistat on/off mat stat really sucks at keeping stable temps, it just doesn't seem to keep them constant. I've got a habistat pulse stat now and it is brilliant, keeps the temps to within .2C each side of ideal. If that microclimate one is an on/off stat like the habistat, then I think they just might be a bit poor! I regret buying a mat stat, should of just got a pulse one straight away. |

have you moved the stat or probs at all, one of my micro climates is a nightmare if I've done some work in the viv and caught it i have to monitor it and make sure I haven't knocked the temp range out |

The normal temps will feel cool relative to your body temperature.
As I said, the microclimate has quite a wide temperature range between switching ON and OFF. The Habistat is more accurate with a nominal range of +/- 1*C.
It's possible the probes were moved slightly away from the mat by the snake moving about. |

they are tied together with an elastic hair bobble, it's never really at a steady temp but never goes any higher than 30*c and no lower than 27*c. the inside of his viv never really feels hot to touch but it was very hot this afternoon and he has taken to lying on the hot side rather than cool at the moment. just glad he's ok and no damage has been done. I just don't understand why it went so high as nothing has changed with the set up at all. |

Make sure that both sensor probe and thermometer probe are tied together and monitoring the same part of the heat mat. You can either use a hot glue gun, zip/ cable ties or even elastic bands. Or weigh down the cables with the hide if it is heavy enough.
Use the thermometer reading to measure the temperature, NOT the dial setting on the thermostat. The microclimate tends to have a wider switching range so aim to get the maximum at about 29*C. |

under the aspen at hot side, they have always ben there and never had anything like this before. the aspen at warm side is just a thin layer. |
