Posted - 21/03/2013 : 16:57:16 Hello Guys,
I suggested this before but hopefully I can get more interest this time:
I want to make a spreadsheet (that will be available to everyone) which will hold data about your snakes. This will maybe put alot of peoples minds at rest about certain things like size/weight etc.
So please participate and I will put something together.
What sex is your snake? How old is your snake? How Long is your snake? How heavy is your snake? What morph? How often do you feed them and how much? Do you think your snake is over weight? Has your snake ever had any illnesses? If so what? Do you encourage your snake to enter Brumation every year?
If I've missed anything let me know but otherwise I will publish data as it comes.
Thanks in advance for all that take part!

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 22:23:09 I can see both sides of the argument here but I feel that as long as it is stated that this is a guide and not a rule (and also that there are sooo many people on this forum that will help with any further questions) then it should be fine, so below are the details that I know. What sex is your snake? Unsure (possibly female but that is only going in tail length) How old is your snake? Approximately 9 months - 1 year How Long is your snake? 75cm How heavy is your snake? Unknown What morph? Carolina How often do you feed them and how much? Every 6 days 1 fluff/fuzzy Do you think your snake is over weight? Has your snake ever had any illnesses? If so what? No Do you encourage your snake to enter Brumation every year? No
I hope this helps |

There has to be an acceptable Length vs Weight range. Age may not be relevant but grams per centimeter is.
Kinda like a snake BMI
The problem is I know of cases where snakes have been approximately the same age, the same length and the same weight but one is over-weight and the other isn't. I guess it's all to do with their differing body metabolisms, how muscular they are, etc.
No offence taken George . It's an interesting thought but I find it hard to see that you could get an accurate, or even proposed, idea of what a snake 'should' be.

Thats the thing there is no general trend, every snake is different. Snakes eat snakes grow thats the only general trend. How fast they grow or how much weight is added cant be gauged by stats.

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 20:24:43 I disagree, yes every snake varys, but they will vary within a specific range, for example it will not be 4ft when it's a year old but if you look at a scatter graph you may see that it might be expected to be between 1ft and 2ft. Either way if it seems its not popular I don't want to upset anyone so I won't do anything more with it. No offense caused I hope. |

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 20:09:10 Well I can understand that there will always be exceptions as with any population but the information will not have pass/fail criteria associated with the results. It's merely an indication of general trends. I will be sure to write an explanation to go with it of course |

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 19:54:14 Personally I agree with Gmac, George. Too often I have had to relieve worries of new owners who see pics of other snakes the same age as their own, or hear mention of weights, and stress that their snake isn't as big, or isn't eating the same.
Even corns from the same clutch, fed exactly the same, will differ....sometimes a lot.
I have an adult female who is just over 4' and only just over 400g. If I didn't know what I do, that she'd been mistreated since she was a hatchling until I took her on, I would have been paranoid about her weight and the fact I couldn't get her big enough to take large mice, and that she even struggled with mediums. An extreme example, I know....but was she my first snake and I looked at a graph showing even approx size and length of corns at certain ages, she'd be no-where near where she should be and I'd naturally stress about it.
All that matters is that your snake is eating, putting on weight and healthy, not what other people's snakes are doing. But if there is somewhere that people can look to see how their snake 'should' be doing, they'll look and they'll worry....it's human nature.

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 19:48:27 I appreciate your view but that is not my intention. The idea is to take a statistical look at captive corn snakes and gather some useful information for keepers to refer to. It's not going to be completely specific as any survey isn't, but none the less, I hope it might be very useful. So the more that take part the more accurate it becomes! |

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 19:25:24 That keepers will get incredibly paranoid, its my snakes bigger than your snake type thing. Healthy snakes are just that healthy, they dont fall into a weight / size bracket it doesnt exist for snakes. |

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 17:47:42 Well, I expect there will be quite a variance of data and that is normal. After all, we as humans vary massively from one another so I would expect similar from any other animal.
I just think this information would be very useful and it hasn't been done before, yet I keep seeing comments for size weight etc charts. What worries you about the survey in particular? |

Posted - 21/03/2013 : 17:23:26 the issue I see with this is no 2 corns are the same, they are all fed differently, different prey growth may be slower in some quicker in others, it may benfit but at the same time it could worry some folks that dont fall within a certain band. These types of spreadsheet scare me in all honesty. |
