I have had Slink for about 6 months now (she must be about 7months old I think) and have just recently moved her into the vivarium from the faunarium. I don't know if it is just that I couldn't see her before in the faunarium because the faun was inside the vivarium so did not notice that she didn't move much but now she is in the viv I have noticed that she is almost always in one of her hides. Is this normal at this age or should I be seeing her out of the hides more often? If this is normal then I don't mind I just hope it doesn't mean that she is stressed or something?
Also when I handle her she pretty much doesn't stop moving trying to find somewhere to hide and I have noticed in some pictures of everyone else's snakes that they seem very relaxed (I saw one picture of a snake just led between someone's legs). If I put her on my lap then she will try to make a run for it. Is this just that she is still young or am I not handling her enough? |

Heym you've all dropped baby snakes... Imagine the shock when your 5'6" female suddenly believes SHE can fly and leaps from round your neck only to land on the floor looking a little dazed XD |

I'm glad you have said that as I have dropped slink a couple of times (luckily not from a big height) and felt so bad about it. I was sure that she would calm down a bit when she is older but it's a relief to have it confirmed.

She's still young, and they can be very quick and hard to keep hold of. I expect you'll see a big difference in her this time next year when she's a bit older  I used to be very worried holding Falco when he was a hatchling, he was very fast and jumped out of my hands quite a few times. I would sit on the floor as I dropped him a couple of times, just couldn't hang onto him He's still quite shy but very mellow when he's out now and just sits there |

Many snakes become more relaxed with age ( except for my Bazilishka ). But they all have they own personalities, too, some are bolder, some shy. It could be that she's still getting used to her new viv, and much more space.
Re hiding - that's completely normal, like Moppet says. Corn snakes are crepuscular ( active at dusk and dawn ), and mostly hide away and sleep during the day. I'd be more worried, if she was constantly out and trying to escape. Her being in the hide means she's content.
Many young snakes are active and trying to escape, when handled. Just be gentle, and handle her several times a week ( not after feeding ), but not for long periods. She'll find out you aren't going to eat her, an will get used to you.
Pictures can be misleading, I've got lots of pictures of Bazilishka, looking calm and slow, when she was really whizzing around, and just happened to stop for a second :-) |

She's still young, she might calm down more as she gets older and bigger. Apollo is my calmest snake whilst I'm handling him, but he always hides away in his viv (apart from this time of year when he's been looking for the ladies...)
It's quite normal for snakes to spend most of their time hiding, at any age. Younger corns tend to be more skittish and inclined to make a break for it. Aphrodite went through a phase where she was convinced she could fly and would try to leap out of my hands! Now she's a little bigger she's got over that thankfully. I don't know about everybody else but most of my snake photos are very lucky snapshots of my snakes. Corn snakes are normally quite active snakes to handle (compared to say ball pythons etc).
Slink might chill out more as she grows up, she's still young yet |
