Posted - 14/09/2012 : 09:41:20 We have always used heat mats and know where to place the probe with a mat but we are setting up our royals viv soon and I am unsure where to place the probe with a ceramic. Its statted with a pulse stat and has a guard.
Do we put the probe on top of the hot hide with digital thermometer underneath/inside the hot hide to get accurate temps?
OR
Do we put the probe underneath/inside the hot hide with the digital thermometer?
OR
Should the probe be attached to the side of the guard next to the bulb and just use the digital thermometer to get the temperatures right?
I am concerned about the temperatures on top of the hide becoming very very hot or should I not worry about that.
Thanks x. |

Posted - 14/09/2012 : 21:05:42 My bulb is about 1.5cm from the bottom bit of my guard and I can hold my hand on the guard there without it burning me and the temps seem to drop off pretty quickly the further you move your hand away so the top of your hide should be fine underneath the ceramic. |

Posted - 14/09/2012 : 19:17:32 I really don't think you need to worry, placed a thermometer inside the hot hide and left for 45 mins and it is in fact 1degree cooler inside the hide than directly under the ceramic. You will obviously have a guard for the ceramic and if left alone i.e. not losing heat by leaving the glass open you will find the guard will not get excessively hot. |

Posted - 14/09/2012 : 18:31:00 What is concerning me is the temps inside the hot hide. If i put a digital thermometer in the hot hide and set the stat going by the the thermometer then I know temps inside the hide will be spot on but the temps ontop of the hide are going to be way hotter. Now I'm assuming that the royal is likely to spend most of his time inside the hide and unlikely he will lay on top of it. Are the temps on top of the hide likely to cause burns if he decided he wanted lay on top of it and bask as it were. May be unlikely but his not like other royals I know. Don't think he realises what he is to be honest |

Posted - 14/09/2012 : 18:05:37 I had the same concerns when I first set up my ceramic. I use a rubber band to tie my stat and thermometer probes together and place them directly under the bulb on top of the substrate. My hot hide is positioned right next to the probes. |

Posted - 14/09/2012 : 18:01:32 I have two ceramic heaters for my carpet python, the probe and the stat cable on the basking side comes up through the hide and I drilled a hole through a rock (hard going) for the probe on the slightly cooler end.

Hope it helps.
