Hi all , I have had dexter now for 10 days and although he seems very comfortable I only control his viv via 2 x Exo terra non digital thermometers . I am not entirely confident in these readings so I am going to treat him to a digital set . I have seen many on amazon and would love to get some feed back on some models. Please see list below .
1 - GM550 Non-contact IR Infrared Digital Thermometer - Measurement Range: Between -50 °C and 550 °C (Between -58 °F and 1022 °F)
2 - TRIXES Digital LCD Fish Aquarium Marine Vivarium Thermometer
3 - Lucky Reptile Thermometer Deluxe
I am interested in the hand held infrared thermometer and would be greatful if anybody has had any experience with them... Many thanks
P . S - all dexter does is sleep in his cool hide ( 24 degree) and I have never seen him venture out . He was fed on Monday and I found a poop tonight after 48hrs . There are also signs of him taking a bath as the substrate is wet by water bowl. If I want to take him out his viv is it ok to lift his hide and coax him or just leave him? I have plenty of cover in his viv for him to explore but he just seems lazy.

The thing with IR is you need to know the emissivity of what your measuring otherwise you wont get accurate readings.
Mostly I use mine to play with the cat(it has a pointer laser) |

Hey thanks for all your replies!! 
I think i'm gonna get 2xdigital and an IR just for the fun of it. But Dexters comfy anyway in his viv so I must have something right. Playtime tonight went well after initially getting him out of his viv with a feeble effort of a strike of my wifes fingers ,
"OH DEXY YOU ARE A BIG SCAREY SNAKEY!!" HA HA
The first 2mins a bit tense then settled on my wifes lap whist she gave him a stroke. 'ARRH' Seemed to really enjoy it and then went exploring up sleeves etc. He's a lovely chap and he would appreciate all your expert advice , Thanks from DEX. |

Cheap and cheerful for me too and no complaints, I do also have a IR hand held as a back up to check the cheapos are still registering accurately and for checking awkward places but you can't do better than to have your thermo probe permanently in place for quick reference. |

They don't have to sit in the warm hide, they can digest at various temperatures, it just takes various amount of time. As long as the snake can choose its preferred temperature, all is fine.
How did the handling session go? 
P.S. I use Exo terra digital thermometers, they also record your min/max temperatures, they've been pretty good so far. |

I use cheap digital thermometers off a well known auction site... At £2 each can't complain!! |

I use the exo terra digital thermometers that I stick with hot glue along with the stat probe to the heat mat. I like these as they record the max and min temps and you just need a quick look to see if the temp is right. I also have a IR temp gun that is great for checking temps in lots of different places quickly but you have to open the glass doors to get a reading otherwise it tells you the temp of the glass. I only bought this as I have a ceramic set up for my JCP and wanted to check for hot spots in different areas without having to keep moving a probe around. I do also use a exo terra thermometer as well for this set up which is tied to my stat probe for a quick check at a glance. Up to you really what you use, a digital thermometer is a must and one with a probe is more than sufficient for a corn but if you can afford both then no reason not to have both. |
