Dexter is due his 2nd feed after coming home with us. I was told that he was 2 yrs old and eating 2 fuzzies every 7 days.
He has had his first feed last Monday and all went well. Does this sound about right for his age? Also I would like to start weighing him to make sure he's doing alright. What should he roughly weigh now, and when should I weigh him i.e before or after a feed. It was also recommended that we take him to the vets after a few weeks to give him a once over , would this be recommended by yourselves? and would anyone give advice on pet insurance or what to do if we ever get concerns with our little friend, would a pet shop give better more honest advice as I never really trust anybody I have to pay, i'm sure you would all agree.

THANKS , I'm still new to snake care so i hope i've got his home right , he looks happy and he is feeding well, thanks for the advice..

Thanks for all your advice I realy do take all your comments on board. Dexters feed went well tonight and he devoured 2 small mice , as you all advised ,TA. It's the first time he struck for his food tonight and first time I have ever experienced it , I enjoyed a good old tug-o-war with him. He still feels very tense when we get him out his viv but then all of a sudden he either relaxes or is playing a game of 'play dead' as all his body goes limp and he allows us to handle him. Then straight back in the viv for a quick drink and a hide in his favourite cave. oh yeah 2 bumbs were to be seen in Dexters tum! Thanks again for all who replied and it's a great reassurance to get some feed back. See Ya... |

Snakes can be different sizes and still be healthy for them. Apollo has only recently gone onto double fuzzies and he is over a year old. I don't think he could manage a small quite yet as it is too wide for him. Maybe in 6 months time 
I took Apollo to a vet to have him checked out shortly after I got him, but that was partly so that I could make sure I knew a good reptile vet was nearby who would be able to help if anything was to go wrong. I haven't taken Titan to be checked and I don't intend to take the newbies either unless there is something wrong.
I haven't got my snakes insured...but my dog isn't insured either. I keep meaning to insure the dog but I don't think I will be insuring the snakes. From what I understand, things go wrong with them quite rarely so I have an emergency vet fund instead |

I'd try him on a small and see how he goes myself. My 2 year olds are on mediums but they may well be larger than Dexter if he's been fed a smaller prey size. Easy way to weigh him is to stick his feeding tub on your scales,zero the scales,plop him in and record the weight and then offer him the mouse
As for what he should weigh,they are just like us humans and all grow at their own rate. |

Everyone's different but if it's any help mine were on smalls at 9 months and mediums at a year. Unless yours is seriously small I would up to smalls now. Always weigh before feeding, less stress the better after feeding. No need for vet visit unless you suspect something's wrong and only a reptile vet if possible. Not many on here use pet insurance. |

At 2 it should really be on atleast a small every seven days. |
