Hello everyone,
Been having a look at vivs online and I like the look of the Ax48's.( 4 feet height) Would this type of viv be ok to house a corn snake. I like the thought of the height so tango could have a good climb. He is along way off one of these yet. Still way to small. Does it matter about height. I know hatchlings have to be in a small viv, is this the case for adults also, I read somewhere that an adult should be in a viv the same size as there lenght( 4 foot snake should be in a 3 foot by one foot viv minimum.) I've never seen a maximum size. Don't know if this a stupid question.
Also would a heat mat be ok for this type of viv. R would I need something else for this size.
Last stupid question( for today anyway, lol), What age/size could I move Tango into something like this. The viv he is in now is 16 by 12 and 7 inch height. Would it be ok to jump up from this viv size to that in one go. ( I would have lots of hides and green in)

I'd go for the Ax, if you have the space for it. I have heard of people having arboreal vivs for corn snakes and the snakes do enjoy the opportunity co climb.
You could always divide it up whilst he's small ( and you can also divide it up should you decide to get another snakie later  . If not, Tango will have a mansion.
Mat would be ok, if you really want to spoil him, you could put a light in higher up and create a basking shelf. He might or might not use it... |

I personally think alot depends on the individual corn. I am sure most of mine would really enjoy a tall viv as well as width. They are very active and always climbing around if given the choice. If you did go for the AX you can always buy the divider to use making a less tall viv and see how it goes. Obviously he is to small at the moment for this size but see no reason why it could not be used when older. If you have the space then I would say provide as big a viv as you can for your corn, put loads of plants, hides and vines in. Just because its a corn it does not mean it has to live in a bedsit spoil your corn and give it a palace instead. |

Like I said i have read about the minimum viv size, it's just my viv looks way to small to house a 2 foot snake. I think it's just because it's only 7 inch high. I didn't think about putting in a divider. That would help, as the step up in viv side won't be as great.

The ballpark measure is the viv should be 2/3rds of the snakes length long and 1/3rd as long wide.
Ie. A 6ft snake should have a viv 4 ft by 2 ft.
Right now my yearling corn is in a 2ft by 1ft viv and is roughly 26" long.
He should be good there till the summer then he'll have to move to a bigger enclosure.
Your little guy is a good size for his current space(16"+12"), when he gets to around 20" - 22" you are going to want to step the viv size up.
At that time if you were going to move him directly into the 36" x 15" LX36 IMO you should split it with a divider so it's roughly 24" x 15" to keep him more comfy and secure till he grows into it.

Thanks for the reply auld baldy,
at what age/size would I move him up to this viv size. He is still small at 16 inch and 4 month old. So I know he is way off yet. I don't want to move him too soon that he is stressed in a big viv.
Stupid question.
If I leave him in the viv he is in now for to long. Could this cause problems with him as he gets older.

Hi Neil, ask as many questions as you like. You will get an answer even if you think it might seem stupid. 
I'd say the LX36 is a more suitable size for an adult Corn. There is plenty room for hides, some logs, vines and climbing frames and the snake won't feel lost. I have 2 of them plus another 2 home made which are fractionally bigger. One Corn is 5' and to be honest has more than enough room to play in.
The Habistat 11x17 20watt heat mat plus Habistat 100watt Mat Thermostat is fine for this size of viv.
When moving into the bigger viv you can place a smaller container or tub with the lid off in the viv and let the snake venture out and explore for itself. Leave it for a week to settle before handling.
