I am currently watching my new 3 month old corn snake trying to escape from his faun, i'm sitting on the other side of the room so don't think he realises i'm here. He seems so determined to break out, trying to squeeze his nose through the air vents (which he definitely can't fit through), and he has been at it for about half an hour. I am beginning to question keeping him caged up, is he distressed by being captive or am I just anthropomorphising too much? I handled him earlier for only the second time so could I have done something to affect him? This is the first time i've spent so long watching him so not sure if this is his normal evening behaviour. I am a total animal lover so don't want to be morally torn about keeping him, I know this is a bit of a stupid post, but I just feel a bit sad watching him trying to squeeze out  |

It's never natural to keep any animal in captivity, as I'm sure you're aware.
But simply by asking this question shows that you're keen to do what's right for your pet and will be a great keeper. Snakes aren't like a dog or cat that will bond and have a voice, they'll show you when they're unhappy by displaying stressed behaviour. This can be in the form of not eating, becoming snappy, biting and various other ways. Snakes seem to do well in captivity and should have a better life if they're properly cared for. Food and water is on tap, their environment is clean and free from threat and they will eventually learn this and live stress free, contented lives.
When my snakes are out and about they're constantly exploring and looking for new places to hide - the escape attempts are just a natural extension of that. Little Houdini gits they are! |

Hes just testing for escape routes mine do it regularly no need to worry. |
