does anyone know of a list anywhere of woods that are safe to use for platforms, shelves, etc?
i made some platforms but realised the tops where ply with a sheet of pine on one side so there no good

i coated it all in yacht varnish and got loads soaked into the edges.
its the top sheet of ply that im sure is pine. if i give it 2 or 3 coats of varnish would it be safe to use?

If it's a bit of pine that's showing through the edges, just get some aquarium sealant and blob that along it.
You'd need to make sure any edges are sealed anyway to prevent the risk of swelling, so sealing it should make it good.
