Im looking to switch the light fitting.

Made the classic mistake of taking the old fitting off and not documenting ANYTHING AARRGGG....

The room has 2 swtiches, one at either end of a flight of stairs...

THe hole in the ceiling has 3 wires together (black, red and earth)
and another 2 loose black leads

The new fitting has 3 inputs... L,N and E...

how do i get the same 2 way switching functionality with just 3 inputs?

Cheers

Can I clarify something please??

Did you remove a single switch fitting from the wall? A double switch fitting from the wall? or a light fitting from the ceiling?

I'm slightly confused with your original post.

completely agree with Spreebok, 240v is not something to mess about with, it can and potentially will kill you if you get it wrong.
Double switches, ie two switches that control one light are looped, and its not always obvious which ones which.
If you get it wrong 1 of 3 things could happen.
You could electrocute youself, which could end badly.
you could cause a serious fire
You short wires in walls and cost yourself 10 times what it would have done originally.

Stuff that can easily kill you is best left to people who know what they are doing, if you dont know you are relying on luck, amd seeing as you are not qualified (crazy i know) you will likely invalidate your household insurance, which would leave you BIG time out of pocket.

Not being funny, but get a proper sparkey in if you can't figure it out. Best to shell out a bit and not electrocute yourself ;)

Look at this link.... not sure if it will help http://www.howtowire.co.uk/lighting.html figure is a two switch lamp i think

EDIT: Found this also??

quote:
There's only 2 possible solutions for this situation (and they've both already been suggested I think)...

Solution 1
2 x red into the 'empty' terminal, 1 x black into the 'L' terminal (this should be the one that comes back from the switch and have a red tag on it), and 1 x black into the 'N' terminal.

Solution 2
However, if this ceiling fitting is the first of two on the same circuit (ie, the other is slaved off this one) then it's simply 2 x red into the 'L' terminal and 2 x black into the 'N' terminal.

Obviously, the earths go to the 'earth' terminal(s)

There are no other solutions for 2 cables/one light.

so the lives and switched lives together into the live...

the one neutral into the N

and earth to earth?

didnt notice the 2 black fly leads having red collars on...

Think you are going to need a chocolate box to get the 3 blacks into one wire. Then one wire from the choc box to the light. A brief description here...

quote:
Typial ceiling rose wiring...

Red - Always live
Black - neutral
Green / yellow - earth.

***Black with a small red sleeve - This is the switched live.

If changing a fitting to one that only has a 3 way connector, you will need a terminal connector to join the other cables and then tuck it into the ceiling void.

You should end up as follows.

All the reds, connected together.

All the blacks connected together. Then connect the blue from the light fitting into this group.

The black with a red sleeve, connected to the brown of the light fitting.

All green / yellows connected together.

EDIT: Tho i am not a sparky so you may need to get one in
