Hi guys firstly thanks for having me on the forum and i apologise if anyone finds my post boring or newbieish but i just want to get everything right and have a few querys

1.I'm not sure what size heat mat i should buy everything iv read suggest it should cover a minimum of a third and a maximum of a half of the floor area of the viv (dimensions 25hx25dx18w)
also ive read ill need a thermostat do theese come with heat matts or will i need to buy one seperately

2.What susbtrate does everyone reccomend ?

3.Here goes probably my most stupid quuestion but gonna ask anyway Does the morph of the snake affect personality/temperment ? our old corn was just a common and was as soft as a brush however ive seen some amazing snakes and might like to buy something a bit diffrent lol

4.Whats the most effective way to monitor temperatures ? someone suggested a thermometer at each end is this adeqaute ?

5 Lighting what do i need where should it be and how long should it be used for ?

6.From reading the info on here i gather i cant keep the hatching in the viv till its bigger the shop told me itd be ok to keep it it the tub i buy it in on a heat mat for a while could i buy one of those plastic pet carriers and keep it in that till its big enough to be let into the bigger viv ?

Thanks for taking the time to read my questions guys and sorry for any stupid questions i really just dont wanna get it wrong is all

Ellie and disney i rehomed as a breeding pair. They are now about 15 and 16yrs. Harry and George i also rehomed from a friend who didnt want the mess as she was expecting a baby. They are 6 and 4 i think. All have their own little charecters. Love them all. They are in pairs. But i do let them all out to play 2gether and they get on well.

You do need a thermostate. But you do have to buy it seperately. And general consencus has been that rep shops do not tell people they need one.
Best way to monitor temps is a digital thermemeter placed on the heat mat.(i tie mine to the thermostate probe using an elastic band). Crystal or dial ones only measure the air tempreture not the tempreture of the mat.
i would personally keep any new snake on kitchen roll to begin with. It is easier to see urates, poo and incase they regurge. Also this will help you recognise healthy poo urates and what is normal. Then as newbie has said aspen is great. iv tried all sorts but only just moved over to aspen and will never look back. The snakes love to burrow in it making tunnels. Its is fun to watch them poking their noses out of there own made tunnels. But what ever substrate you use only put a thin layer over where the heat mat lies.
Lighting is not a requirement for corns. It has no health benifits and if using a heat mat, this is sufficient for heating requirements. Saying that you can put in a light in for viewing reasons. I have just purchased a LED strip light as these are safest and do not require a guard,
My babys were in a exo terra faun, large. They are about £12. or most people use a RUB (really usefull box). They are just as good and as corns grow this can be upgraded cheaply untill they are big enough for a normal viv.

Ahh that's the difficult part! I just let my boyfriend go and pick one, that way I didn't struggle to choose either that or just buy lots!

Hiya Paulie,

I've only been snake keeping for 8 months, but I'll do my best!

1) Thermostats come seperately usually and are essential to prevent the heat mat harming your snake

2) I use Aspen substrate for my corn and he loves burrowing into it

3) I don't think the morph affects the temperment really, all snakes are different

4) I have a thermostat controlling my heat mat, and also use exo-terra thermometers at each end to keep an eye on temps

5) My corn is in a faunarium so he just has to make do with natural light!

6) I keep Vin in an exo-terra faunarium currently and it's big enough for him, he's about 24 inches long I think the general consensus is that they become nervy in places that are too big

Hope this helps a little
