Posted - 09/07/2011 : 11:39:36 OMG that poor snake, i personally don't use heat lamps as can't see the need for them when i use a heat mat with stat and thermometer so i can manage the actually temperature and not presumed from the stat, i have LED lights from grr i hate to say this places name 'pets at home' they're actually designed for fish tanks but light up the viv perfectly, if i wish to see him at night |

Posted - 09/07/2011 : 11:31:31 OMG that BBC article is awful. Ive seen posts of burnt snakes on here before but nothing that bad. Stats are definitely a must have. They arent even expensive!!! as for lighting, im gonna stick to LEDs, I know you can get cages to fit around bulbs, but LEDs seem a lot safer as they dont get hot. Back on the topic though, i wouldnt worry about your snake feeling cold, as long as there is somewhere warm in the viv, the snake is perfectly capable of regulating its own temperature. The snakes only need the heat to digest food. |

Posted - 09/07/2011 : 09:23:58 Just looked at the link to the news article about the burnt snake and one of the things that gets on my nerves is so called experts in pet shops that sell "complete" set ups that don't come with a stat for the heat mat. There is one shop that I know of that sells set ups with both a heat lamp and mat with no stat or bulb gaurd and they claim to specialise in reptiles! Sorry for the rant but there you go. There are lots of words I wanted to use but it would not have got past the powers that be and I would probably get kicked off the forum.lol |

Posted - 08/07/2011 : 17:53:10 a snake will always feel a little cold to us as our normal body temp is around 36.5, there's is lower than this, they're cold blooded thats why they need the heat products |

Posted - 08/07/2011 : 13:03:06 I think that a stat is a must. I have seen pics where an unstated mat has burnt right through a plasic viv, imaging what that could do to a snake! I don't know how cold your snake is but mine allways feel pretty cold when he has been in the cold hide for a while. |
