I just need to say RIP Luke, it would not of been possible for a person to be any more inspirational than himself.

Such an incredible person and such a sad loss to all those that ever met him and more importantly his friends and family, so my thoughts are with them.

I was speaking to the man in Exotics sheffield today and he knew him, he told us he was in a rush trying to get it all ready to open for the public so he probably became a bit lapse with what he was doing.

it is truly sad that a man died, but you have to agree free handling king cobras is nothing but reckless as he found out at his own cost.
Kehhlyr Posted - 04/07/2011 : 22:04:18
That would be because I do think he was a plank for the way he free-handled like that in front of the cameras, it makes him seem like he was showing off. As I said in a previous post it's his family I feel sorry for because they would've been watching him do that regularly KNOWING that one day was gonna be the last, it wasn't a matter of if but when!

It's my opinion that there's a time and a place for ridiculous handling of hot species, and it isn't in the dining room of a semi in hertfordshire (or wherever the place is again).
I am not saying bad things about a person that lost their life, I'm saying bad things about the way they ACTED, it's totally different. I would 100% expect people to say I was a massive plank if I got myself bitten due to stupid handling.

I fully understand that some people do also handle snakes like that, but I believe he played up for cameras.

/ninja edit:
I would suggest to check out the quote near the bottom of this article. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/family/pets/8607220/Snake-lover-killed-by-one-of-his-24-king-cobras.html
I'm sorry, but the warning signs that a bite was imminent are in the photo, and in the quote.

Fair enough have your views but don't be saying bad things about a person that has lost their life, it is sickening!! And I think you might find if you read K's post once again that he was VERY rude in the comments he made!

Kehhlyr referring to the deceased as a plank and a berk may be...

Certainly nothing else in this thread seems disrespectful to me though. Along with everyone else, my condolences to his family. But if you play with fire...

At least he went doing something he loved, much like mad Ozzie Steve Irwin...

I have to agree with K, those animals are evolved to kill with a single bite, with that knowledge the only safe way to handle a snake like that is to not handle a snake like that. I would look like Robocop or Lancelot with the armour I'd have to wear before going near one of those beasties. They are beautiful, fascinating and mesmerising but it the same as when you see people kissing them on top of their head if you play with fire you will get burnt. It is sad that a man died and his intentions were good but his execution of those intentions were very dangerous.

I think they aren't allowed to keep anti venom because it in itself is potentially lethal if administered incorrectly, for example if administered for a dry bite or in too high a dose, your vitals need to be monitored constantly as there is no such thing as a set dosage of anti venom.

I fail to see any rudeness? Just comments that the love he had for them resulted in him being careless. I think your reading things and taking them the wrong way.
Tiffany-x Posted - 04/07/2011 : 19:15:44
I think you people are disgustingly rude and disrespectful, someone lost their life and all you can do is comment negatively, I think that is truly heartless and I am absolutely horrified!!
Sta~ple Posted - 02/07/2011 : 09:22:17
It's a good job the people that went round the sanctuary and got to see the cobras up close never got bit really.
Kehhlyr Posted - 02/07/2011 : 00:32:38
There's a chap that I speak to every so often that always says that the most venomous snake in the world is the one that just bit you.

To be honest even now looking through his vids a bit more, then although I do feel sorry for his family, they should've been prepared for it. His handling of venomous the way he does just makes him look like a plank to me. I've freehandled adders half dozen times and every single time I've done that I've received a bite as thanks for it. So sod doing that with cobras, berk.

too true gmac, these animals are lethal weapons, they're designed to kill, and kill is just what they will do. I think this man is a big inspiration to me, doing what im doing at the same age, just a shame that the thing he was doing to try to save a species, killed him.

Dont claim to understand much about keeping DWA, but what I do know is the next bite, be it the first bite or 3rd bite, may be the last.

I know if you have a snake such as that one your supposed to check with the local hospital if they still have it and if it's in stock. You would have thought if you had a sanctuary though which is like a mini zoo you would be allowed it in? Uless it has very specific storage requirements then maybe? Bah At least they have adrenaline though I guess.

Isn't this the first wda listed animal that has killed someone in the UK now? :(
Tiffany-x Posted - 01/07/2011 : 07:58:15
Without a doubt that guy was nuts, and they keep adrenaline on site for a boost because it helps your body to cope with the envenomation until you get to hospital for the anti venom because you arent allowed to keep it, obviously for some reason of which is unknown to me.

I understand entirely what you guys are saying and I do think maybe they are a little too confident with the snakes from time to time so it was going to happen, as it has before with many snakes, but no one was to know that the next bite would be the last. I do believe I read somewhere it was something like the first recorded death (or one of) in England or the UK or something, I dont quite remember what it was that I saw, but it was something along those lines. So I guess no one knew what would happen and it is the last thing anyone expected, seeing as anti venom is usually given in time and successfully. :/

I feel so sorry for his family, but like the others, must admit that I had doubts about the safety of the way he handled them. Tragic though

I thought that... I also wonder why they did not have anti venom on site or is that not allowed?
Kehhlyr Posted - 30/06/2011 : 23:52:26
It is sad news indeed, however after watching several vids of how he handles the snakes then I think a decent bite and envenomisation was inevitable. You can't basically go around freehandling venomous reptiles like that as it's how complacency comes about.
To be honest I wonder if it was him freehandling (showing off?????) and not keeping his wits about him that caused the bite?
It'll be interesting to hear how it happened.
