Oh My life! My otherwise perfectly contented calm snake, and to give you an idea I even let my eldest 2 children hold him (7+3) including allow My youngest at 20months to be around and to touch him he's that calm and relaxed!

Well Monday I had to go into hospital with my daughter for an operation so I had planned them to feed the day before (Sunday)... I opened his faun... he rattled his tail.. SO I left him alone, he isn't a tail rattler he is usually so placid.
Went into hospital with my daughter left him with the other half and told him to leave them well alone they would be fine for 2 days.

So I defrosted him a fuzzy this evening. Went back in and he again rattled and coiled... not wanting to push it I took out his hides and everything put kitchen roll down and dropped his fuzzy onto it.
Usually when I get him out to feed he is straight in there eager... He didnt seem to know it was there... Almost an hour later he found it and swallowed it as eagerly as he would normally.

Once he had had 5 mins I tried to go in to put his things back, he coiled up and struck me!! He didnt bite I think he headbutted me unless I moved too fast I dont know but he deffintaly struck me but didnt bite!

SOO I put his plant and water bowl back in but as he is sat in the place his hide goes I couldnt put that back in so put him back without his main hide.

So with that in mind. He is due to shed but has no showing signs of being in blue. (he last shed 5th Jan) he usually sheds every 5-6weeks.

I have to admit he hasnt been handled too much recently as kids have been ill and preparing to go into hospital with eldest BUT I did make a point of holding them every cpl days and he was fine,
Temp warm end is 30 stable.

Im thinking is the faun too small? He looks like he is ready to move up, but then dont snakes like and prefer confined spaces? OR a shed he isnt outwardly showing?

It is SO unuslaual for him to behave like this! I've not been put off and I giggled at him BUT it is so out of character and the first time EVER he has struck me!

i wouldnt stress too much, everyone has an off day, as the others said, some do get grumpy when going into shed, it maybe cuz hes growing up too, and decided he doesnt like to be handled at that time

He has never been grumpy before shedding. But then he was a hatchling he is growing up now! He is an amel yes but usualli I can tell as his scales go whitish but cant see any of that in him at the moment. But I do know he is very due to shed. I have put him bach without his tunnel hide which he LOVES after feeding he always goes in there directly on his heatpad after a feed but as he was in the way (he is fast outsizing his faun) and I tried to move him over gently (which was when he struck me so I couldnt put it back!
I'm waiting on the Other half to finish building his new viv, which is being custom built to fit into an alcove.

My amel doesn't show any visual sign of going into blue but I can tell as he becomes much more reluctant to be held, is very sensitive to touch, and goes into hiding.

It sounds like your snake is getting ready to shed.

It is not unusual for a snake to get grumpy during and just before they shed their skin. If he struck out but didn't make contact it was more than likely just a bluff strike, a warning.

They start the shedding process before we start to see the signs the first signs are nearly always a change in mood, either hiding away or grumpyness.
