Posted - 01/02/2011 : 11:41:13 I found that flour really didn't help when Widget escaped. I swear he was lifting himself over it, as I dusted the whole kitchen, where he turned up, with no trails AT ALL in the flour x.x Just keep the room you believe him to be in warm, as that will stop him from seeking out somewhere else, and try the fridge, the freezer, anywhere that emits a lot of heat! I've seen some people here say they've ripped up skirting boards and floorboards in a search for their snake. My way of looking for Widget was mainly to figure out where he WASN'T, ie. were their ways he could have got into the floorboards or skirting, was he able to get inside the sofas or up behind the radiator, things like that. I narrowed it down to the kitchen when we found that the kitchen units 'skirting' didn't fit properly, so we pulled it all up, but he'd found somewhere really good to hide in there. The traps I laid with food then suggested he was switching from the fridge back to under the units, so my advise really is just to figure out where he ISN'T and then work on setting up traps where you believe he is! I used little boxes to catch Widget and place the rat pups in, as he's ALWAYS preferred not to be seen, so I thought a box would draw him better then a see-through bottle. Depends on the snake though, I guess. Boxes are also drier, and the bait you put in doesn't start to stink so soon x.x A few hours next to the warm fridge and we were nearly sick with a bottle trap that first night!! With the cardboard box, though, it didn't give off a horrendous smell, even after I started braining the rats to bring him in! |

Posted - 01/02/2011 : 11:07:05 Hope the search is going well i have only had Mitch for about 3 months now and he got out for the first time the other day as he is now big enough to slide the glass on the front of his viv i turned round to find it open an inch and Mitch gone... I was in total shock and was so so worried so i know how you feel its not nice after a think about it and a ciggy to help me calm my nerves i started looking checking everywhere leaving nothing unchecked i found Mitch about 20 mins later curled up nicely in the bottom of my record back which i had picked up already to check under but not inside they can literally squeeze in anywhere remain calm and keep searching wish u all the best |

Posted - 31/01/2011 : 23:48:02 Check washing before it gets put in the machine as well, and check the internals of any reclining chairs as well. We've had a member accidently put an escapee in the washing machine, and one in the mechanism of a reclining chair that was found just before the chair got reclined. They are places that could be bad, but thought I'd let you know so you could have the extra info as well.
I've found escapees inside a pc tower in the past, under a wardrobe, and inside someones bed as well. It happens, a lot do turn up again, so don't lose hope. |

Posted - 31/01/2011 : 22:45:52 Yeah with a warm house and no escape routes to the great outdoors they can last a very long time. Just don't give up hope and start the search. I would start by leaving flour all about the place to see if he disturbs any, give you an idea of which room he is in. Its a start. |

Posted - 31/01/2011 : 22:06:22 Thank you so much for your replies! I cannot deny it 'Noku' is very special to us! Well he's my 11yr old son's really. Noku only joined us in Dec but already very loved hehe. Now I can at least reassure my son not to 'wreck the place' or panic and use all ideas! Hopefully I'll be back with good news very soon! Vx |

Posted - 31/01/2011 : 20:13:42 First thing I did when I lost Widget is to check the walls. Apartment walls are NOTORIOUS for having holes and cracks - you want to make sure he's not got out, or could have possibly fallen into the wall cavity! Next, is do a really methodological search. Pull away ANYthing and EVERYthing he could be behind. Start high, go low.
DO NOT PANIC.
When Widget got out, he ended up hiding in the kitchen, and I found him 3 weeks later, after I felt a 'need' to check the snakes, and he was just sat in the kitchen, waiting. Set up bottle/box traps, or do what one man suggested to me, if you have an old hamster cage, is find a food item that is too large to fit through the bars and leave it inside the cage, put it on the floor where you think the snake may have gone, and then, hopefully, the smell of food will attract him, he'll go in and eat, and be unable to get out!
A small apartment should make it easy to find him, especially if its a pretty new building. All you have to do is stay calm, put out traps and just hope you find him. He could last for a few years out and about, trust me! Ripley, of mine, escaped one, and was gone for 6-7months. Someone I met had lost his corn snake for 4 years, and found it when renovating the stairs! Do not fear! You'll get him back! |
