Whether you are or aren't, people will group you with every other 'rescue', or freebie hunters as they are otherwise known. I suggest if you want to look after a snake, go buy one like we did. Either that or you can come help me with mine for free, I wouldn't complain.
I agree, I meant to mention that for my snake I still had to make a donation to the charity which was not small. I didn't mind as if they hadn't been so close I would have purchased one anyway. |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 21:05:02 I got my snake from a rescue centre in the midlands (Proteus) and before we had him I got the faun and equipment etc and went with no idea of what type of snake we would come back with as I thought it wasn't really my place to choose, I knew I wanted a snake and one that I had time and room for. We had a rescue snake as I wanted to help out the centre by a) making a donation and b) being able to care for something that REALLY needed a new good forever home. They had so many reptiles there it was crazy, I asked where they mainly came from and it was people who didn't really realise the commitment they need and also their lifespan so got "bored" of them. I don't know if this really adds to the discussion but thought I would share my experience. The good or maybe the bad thing is the rescue centre is about 3 miles from my house and I know there are lots of lovely creatures there just needing love AND I have a whole spare room which I could fill with vivs...... |

But now in the other section you are looking for a breeding pair of corns.......
Most rescues don't breed the animals as well!! |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 19:34:20 You need to also be willing to take on most reptiles like other rescue places. The couple I got Medusa from rescue all types of reptiles regardless of size and temprament and what's happened to them. They're willing to take on animals 24/7. It's a big commitment and you need to have an all round knowledge of all species not just corn snakes This is their website: http://www.reptiliareptilerescue.co.uk/ They do nurse animals back to health and fork out for vets bills. As said before you need to be 100% commited and willing to take in any species

please don't take this comment the wrong way, but this line really does make you sound like a freebie hunter, and asking on pretty much any forum will result in flames as big as a house :(
If you are serious about wanting to rescue snakes your best bet would be to get in touch with your local animal shelters, RSPCA, airport (customs), zoos etc and ask them to consider you for any future rescues |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 17:17:00 If you seriously want to rescue snakes, then you will most likely be asked for a charity number, which you probably dont have, so cant actually refer to yourself as a rescue. True rescues dont choose what snakes / animals they take in, so what would you intend to do with the Gaboon viper, 4 monocled cobras, 6 western diamondback rattlers, uracoan rattlesnake, and the mangrove vipers that could turn up??? which incidentally are at the local rescue centre to me??? |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 14:55:20 It is very rare to find any snakes been given up free to a good home, I looked into taking a rescue animal instead of a hatchling but there was nothing out there so I ended up going the safer route of getting a hatchling from a reputable supplier. If you are serious though, contact your local RSPCA (and other similar associations) and advise them of what you are setup to look after and they will give you advice and may even contact you should an animal come up. The important thing is you have to have everything prepared and ready before you can consider taking in animals. Set yourself up with equipment, maybe invest in some sort of stack. When a rescue animal comes up you have to be ready immediately to take the animal and to be able to care for it regardless of its background, health or temprement. I would love to run a sanctuary for all animals but I couldn't, I just wouldn't have the money needed to even get something small off the ground and there will already be someone with something bigger out there doing the same thing successfully. |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 14:26:11 Hang on a second, I am simply trying to advise you that, atm, everything sounds a bit contradictory.
You say you want to rescue snakes, but only corn snakes, and I can't make out whether or not you will pay for veterinary care.
Rescuing snakes is not as easy as just waiting for people to hand you their animals. You need *previous* experience of looking after different ages, types and species of snake, dealing with health conditions, aggression and parasites. You need very good quarantine control, cash to spare for vets fees, time dealing with cleaning, administering medication and travelling to collect animals, plus talking to people either over the phone or face to face to discuss their requirements.
If you really want to help rescue snakes, you can't pick and choose under what circumstances you will have them. |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 13:47:35 So you will only rescue snakes that don't require medical care? |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 13:46:49 i would help rescue a snake being mis treated etc... look after it until got it a new home. |

Posted - 16/01/2011 : 13:40:45 Please bear in mind also that rescue snakes may need veterinary care and treatment, strict quarantine (as with ALL new snakes) and may also need supplements and "special" foods. Are you prepared to fork out for vets bills on other peoples unwanted animals? |
