Ok confession time,I am scared of picking up Sylvester, there I've said it. I dont actually know what it is thats giving me the heebygeebies, it couldn't possibly hurt if he bit me. I do put my hands in the viv and he doesn't fret but if I try to pick him up he wrigges like crazy or darts like a bat out of hell, into one of his hides, and I dont want to drag him out of a hide surely that woud stress him and me! What should I do? his speed and skittishness is making me nervous. Any advice please peeps, I am so disappointed in myself for being like this.

I have had Pendulum (baby amel corn) for about 10-11 weeks now, and he is still **** feared of me.
When he simply sees my shadow go passed his faun he darts back under his hide.
The way I catch him without harming him and showing confidence is a few inches behind his head, then even if he darts off, he is up out of the substrate before his whole body is through my fingers.
Once he is out, he is fine (as with 99% of snakes)
Keep on trying, and try not to show fear.
Be confident, and your snake will respond well to it.

There's nothing wrong with you! You just need to manage that first time then you'l be so proud of yourself and your confidence will grow. It's perfectly normal for snakes to be skittish, especially little hatchies. I'd be scared if some giant tried to pick me up! You just have to go for it and grab him. I know that sounds harsh but I don't know how else to put it. Once he's out he'll probably calm down quite quickly and you can weave him in and out of your fingers. Snakes do a great hand massage!! Go on just go for it.........

Don't be so hard on yourself, agree with Louise32 as
I'm really scared of breaking silva even though we have
Had him out quite abit now.

He's so tiny that I think il squash him but hope that with
time il feel more confident of not hurting him.

Your not scared of Sylvester your just lacking confidence when it comes to handling. You get that with time. We were all the same the first time. I'm very confident about corn snakes but I've just got a python and I am probably in the same boat as you with that snake, I'm learning to read his moods, see how he reacts to certain things etc and he is very shy and scared at the moment too so its a double sided problem that only time will solve. It takes a little bit of time for you to get to know your snake and for your snake to get to know you. If you handle just for a few minutes at a time a couple of times a day, your confidence will build and Sylvester will realise your no threat and will slow down.

Just like me with crinkle but after a while I just said screw this put my hand in she skated off I picked her up while she was falling around as soon as she got out of the viv she was so calm and started gently gliding through fingers although my hand was shaking like a vibrator she was fine and now I can't wait to see her after school every day

I have always loved snakes, ever since I was little but until I got Nimbus I had never held a snake!!!

I remember the first time I held him. I was terrified and shaking all over. I think I was more scared of hurting him or him being so fast that I would drop him or he would escape from my hands and get lost in the house!

After holding him for a few times it got much better and now I just put my hand straight in, pick him up and hold him for ages. Luckily he has never tried to strike at me or rattle his tail so I think that helped calm me down lol

Don't be disappointed with yourself! *hugs* They're such fast little things its natural to feel on edge while handling them, I've only had Vin for 10 days and have handled him twice, the 1st time he came out himself so not too bad, but last night I put my hand in and he ran for the hills!

I felt a bit guilty for rootling about in the faun to fetch him out, but once he was out he calmed down loads and settled for a nice handle, maybe Sylvester will to I'm always scared I'll hurt Vin by holding onto to him but like Smiffy said, they;re quite resiliant! Good luck! x

spend some 1 to 1 time with your snake and keep calm, corns are solid little beggers,if you put your hand in the substrate then lift him up from underneath you should have no probs and in no time youll have a loving buddy it sound like you know what to do so just do it :)
