I was wondering what are peoples opinion on 'Pets at Home'.

I went in there today and was looking at their reptile range, the one near me had cornsnakes in for the first time. Being nosy as I am I asked to have a look at them and the women went all weird and rude (really dont have much luck with sales people with snakes). She was telling me that i couldnt see them because they had just been feed and they would regurgitate if she got them out, which is fair enough, and that they werent for sale until wednesday cuz they had to feed twice before they could be sold. Then she told me only one had eaten once and the other 3 hadnt yet. Confused!! So if 3 hadnt eaten why couldnt i see them, they cant regurgitate if they havent eaten. Also three feeds between monday and wednesday... am i not feeding my snake enough or something?!? Thats a feed a day, i dont feed mine that often. Am i doing something wrong or are pets at home as rubish as i really think they are.

have u ever used the rep shop in chippenham??

If thats the one I think it is then I have been to it. I think its the one with the venomus snakes and as part of my course we went on a trip there for our exotics course. Any way the guy was showing us how to handel venomus snakes and was saying dont hold them in the hooks too close to the floor or the will get off... so what happened. He held it to close to the floor and it escaped. So we were all stood there ****ting ourselves while he was trying to catch the escaped snake. Lol

Yup thats the one.
A couple of years ago I bought me nice guinea pigs from there. Had to take one back the next day as it had a massive abses on its throat. :( Really do need to check animals better before I buy them.

My local one seems to look after the bearded dragons and leopard geckos alright. I go in there on my lunch break now and then and everything seems to be cleaned out regularly and they look in fairly good health. I wouldn't buy anything other than supplies or equipment there though, I'd much prefer to go to someone who knows what they're doing.

We adopted some rats from them the other week though. We didn't mean to, only went in to have a look for a vine for Izzy but my girlfriend walked past a couple of white rats that were up for adoption as they couldn't sell and she just couldn't leave them! The stupid guy in the shop was too scared of them to pick them up and scared the life out of them by chasing them round the tank with a box The poor little things are really nervous too, no doubt as a result of spending the last 10 months with little kids bashing on their glass tank. It will take a while but I'm determined to tame them.

I do agree they've improved. My local one has good rodent stuff and aquariums. But they aren't equipped for exotics
mikerichards Posted - 21/09/2010 : 15:12:38
I will probably regret saying this, but Pets at Home are improving.
This in way what so ever means they are even remotely competant, just that they are getting better!!
The one up the road from me has leos and beardies, and i have to say, they are quite well kept, they have all their needs met and are very clean.
To be fair though, all the animals at out local one are very well kept.
For those of you that knew of them, Naughty and Grandma came from there, and lived longer healthier lives than some of the breeder bought rats.

yeah they sell habistat stats at the one in aylesbury but yes very over priced and branches! picked one up for cecil then sae it was £25!! hell no! lmao! altho they did have all their large plastic leaves on sale for £3 when i went in there which isnt to dear compared to other places.
Sta~ple Posted - 21/09/2010 : 13:00:42
They sometimes sell stats in the one near me, hides and other stuff. The stats that they do sell are very overpriced too.
josh9961 Posted - 21/09/2010 : 12:58:43
I meant they were selling rep set ups without thermostats. Not even any separate on shelves.
chrish Posted - 21/09/2010 : 11:35:41
Im sure i remember pet city getting done for giving bad heating advice and a load of peoples faunariums melted, killing the snakes. That was years ago mind...cant imagine they've improved that much...
Sta~ple Posted - 21/09/2010 : 11:27:05
In all fairness, in petshop set-ups the thermostats are normally hidden to make it look nice and so kids don't play with the temp. But yeh, the "fresh" beardie food everytime I look does look bone dry.
josh9961 Posted - 21/09/2010 : 11:24:29
Pets at home should stick to hamsters. Past that they're useless. My local has beardies. No hides. No bulb guard. Rotting food. And no goes left on any baby beardies. No thermostats ANYWHERE. If they get corn in I'll be straight in to show them how wrong they are.

The only time i go in there is when im working alot and i have no time to get to our normal rep shop to get aspen (as petsathomes open til 8)

Mine started selling lizards about 6 months ago but ill go have a nosey 2moro to see if they have snakes yet (this is the ayesbury one) all 10 bar 2 of the fish i bought from there have died! and this is within 2 months, and i wouldnt say they where in bad conditions at mine either! i always kept the tanks clean, filter running and fed.. many times in the past iv had to tell them about dead fish floating at the top of their display tanks! iv been given wrong advise about which fish can be kept together!

I will never buy a animal from there, only supplies.. its sad really :(

Out of interest where they housing these baby corns together and in a massive display tank? also how much where they asking for them? im curious to see how over priced they are compared to a reptile shop.

Another pet shop jumping on the reptile bandwagon without having a clue what they are doing!
More wrong information, wrong setups etc, etc.
Need to calm down, not good for blood pressure!!!!!!

urgh..big chain stores like that should just sell food and supplies not actual animals...

i remember when Pets at Home used to be Pet City, when one first opened back home they had all sorts of reptiles in there and every tom richard and harry was buying them for their kids... then thankfull when pets at home took over (or whatever happened) they stopped selling them.

but the second they started again now you see bearded dragons all over Gumtree because idiots have bought them from there on a whim with some starter kit, no doubt poor corns and other reps will be flooding gumtree now from the same idiots that buy from there. :(
Lixra Posted - 21/09/2010 : 09:26:05
All the big national pet store chains are rubbish imo.

In the states we had a chain called Petco. Their slogan was "Petco... where the pets go...", people in the reptile industry called it "Deathco, where the pets go... to die" morbid yes, but so true.

Leopard geckos on sand, some stores were feeding them salad (wth?), half dead deformed reptiles in tanks, and many autonomous lizards with no tail or regenerated tails. Dirty water, live food hopping around the cage with the reptiles. One thing I thankfully did not see were live mice or rats in with snakes. In the states it's not against the law to feed live prey to reptiles. And unfortunately the amount of injuries you saw as a result of this to the snake was astronomical.

And of course wrong information was given out to perspective buyers. "Oh that little iguana there? He'll only grow to the size of his environment. You can keep him in a 10 gallon tank for life!"

The leopard gecko bit really ticked me off though... because they're so popular they are overstocked and if you bought one from this chain, it was almost certain that it would be infected with crypto. Raaaaage........

OK, I'm done my little rant now. Oh and btw Ammerz, I'm sure he's cute and everything in his own little grotesque way, but Dave.... /shudders. I saw the picture and screamed and lunged myself in the opposite corner of the room. Eeek.
