Or should I say snakes? And that goes for other pets as well.

When I started with corns I thought they should have corny American names, so the Carolina got called Buffy - suits her rust and buff colouring.

As I was lifting Spider(anery) into her viv, I said, 'Come on, Spider.' So that was that.

When my ghost corn arrived she said she was called Salome Spooks. Spooky.

Saffron, the butter, couldn't really be called anything else.

When I got my one-eyed Miami, my ex said, 'What are you going to call her? Cyclops?' So then there was Cy.

Emily, my ginger cat, was named in honour of Emily Bronte. She was semi-feral, and when her cousin followed her to my house one day I took one look at this little waif and said, 'Hello Mouse.' And Mouse she remained. A feral tom arrived a year later around St Patrick's Day and was named after the Irish hero Finn MacCool. That's Finn.

The fish don't have names.

In honour of mikerichards, I've decided to name my stick insects Dave. I have at least seven, so I thought they could take it in turns - Mondave, Tuesdave, and so on. Trouble is, I can't tell them apart, so I never know what dave of the week it is ...

Rizla got his name cos he was so small when we got him. He wasn't much fatter than the average roll up. (He was a hatchling). And I thought the two z's fitted a snake.
Menthol was named to keep with the cigarette theme

well... i haven't got a snake just yet and i'm keeping the name secret til i get him!

But ... we do have a history of weird names for pets!!

Back home with my parents we always had newfoundland dogs...first we had a brown one called Tchibo (german brand of coffee) and a black one called Paddy (after Paddington Bear). Then we got a rescue newfie girl who was originally called Sky... but she had been badly abused and Mum wanted to give her a fresh start, so she was called Mai (like My) as we got her in May (its german for May) and we like the Moomins (character in the books called little My) Our latest newf was Rerun after the character in the Peanuts/Snoopy cartoons, he was the baby who always sat on the back of his mum's bike and we really 'babyed' Rerun...altho he acquired plenty of other less flattering names when we saw he had no brains at all lol...what a dog!!! Sadly he had to be put to sleep last year, altho he was nearly 12, but it was heartbreaking and we haven't had another dog since, and now i've moved out.

My fish at the moment are Pedro the goldfish...just coz i like Mexican sounding names! Lieutenant ShinySides the weather loach... after the bit in Family Guy where Peter over feeds his goldfish lol and an apple snail called Jeffery after the butler in the Fresh Prince!!

Mum's getting another newfie soon tho and she wants to call him Pugwash... I can't wait!!

I want a Pug called Nacho... and a Bassett Hound with a full title and surname... in my mind he is wearing a top hat.

Prize be the snake you name?

Doyle got his name for 2 very good reasons (in my opinion) :D
Firstly, I was watching an episode of Angel, and who comes on screen but the green demon Irish heart throb, Doyle. Not only is he named after an irish man, he's also a green demon :) hahahaha
The second reason, is because I fell in love with a kitten named Doyle who needed rescuing from the rspca center, however I was not allowed him, so I named Doyle in honour of the kitty who needed saving.

I really want a girl to call ofelia from Pans Labyrinth, it's one of my most favourite films, it deserves credit by doing the most holy thing - naming my pets after it :D aha

well, i was going through names you WOULDNT call a snake and came up with Philip, DONT go with the flow, be your own person.

Very true!

In my Siamese breeding days I knew of someone who called two of their Siamese cats Philip - and Monica. All was well until Monica got out, and they had to go round the neighbourhood chanting, 'Monica ...Monica! Kittykittykitty! Monica!'

You know, if I had another corn I'd be tempted to call it Muesli ...

Hey, maybe we should turn this into a 'what would you call your wishlist snakes?' thread?

my first was Sid the Snake :)

the rest are:
Flake - because she's a snow
Cornelia - couldn't think of a name for her so we had a name the snake competition in the pub :)
Brinker - named after Hans Brinker the boy who stuck his finger in a dyke (ooeerrrr!) because he was a gift from a Dutch friend
Maria - the kids named her after Maria in corrie
Dave the Angry Ultramel - because everyone needs a snake called Dave
Gobje - another gift from different Dutch friends, her name is a combination of theirs - its pronounced 'gobby' which is apt, she's proper snappy
Boddington - he's the same colour as a pint of boddies
Stella - same as above, but stella :)

theres 11 more corns unnamed, I might start another thread for suggestions - they're all a year old now!

Derek - glades ratsnake named after my Dad because I got him shortly after he died
Bo - female glades named to match Derek
Reba - our rottie, my wife named her

and theres a pair of hondos, a beardie and a pacman frog, also with no names :(

My son chose Tangos name, he called him it cos he is an orangey colour.

Our male Staffie is called Bryn, as he came from Brindale Road in Brinnington plus hes brindle, so we couldn't really call him anything else lol.

Our female Staffie is called Tia, as the evening we had collected her I sat having a glass of Tia Maria.

Our female cat is called Jasmine, my son chose that as we didn't like the name the rescue centre had given her (Vesta).

Our male cat is called Zazoo, he was called that as we watched the Lion King the same day we collected him and I fell in love with the parrots name (he was called Zazu, but we have spelt the name differently).

There is only one fish that has a name in our fishtanks, he is a Yellow Acara (Aequidens Metae) and hes called Ed. I don't know why we named him or why we named him Ed, but it suits him. Hes a big bruiser of a fish and is very chunky, hes about 6" - 7" long and about 3" - 3.5" deep. Here are a few photos of Ed, I hope you like him:-

Well, you know Tallulah Bankhead was a beautiful blonde actress - famous for her throaty voice and witty one-liners - a good gal to be named after, and fabulous name!

Hi, good morning, Stotty, was thinking about you the other day - have been hearing steam trains lately (???) and then found they were doing steam specials along the east coast line which runs nearby. The other morning I was walking into town - just at the right time to see her as she steamed into the station - beautiful sight!

Medusa is a cool name, and I like Benson for a dog ...if you get another dog will you call it Hedges?

Again, thanks everybody - the names are fascinating!
stotty01 Posted - 27/08/2010 : 00:13:52
medusa as she is a snake goddess and is a girl snake :)
bob as the person who found the tortoise was my mums freind who is a builder
benson as mum was allowed to choose a dog and a breed as long as dad named it, named it this as it was the biggest carp in britain till it died :/ :S even though benson is less than a quater of the size of the fish :P
nova1990 Posted - 27/08/2010 : 00:04:36
