ok so i brought one snake from one shop (this was Dave) and decided to get another one and i know everyy one says it was bad to co-habit snakes but i didnt know at the time and when i asked a second shop in which i got Albrt from the told me it was fine, so i got Albert and i asked for the sex because i knew Dave was a boy and they told me that Albert was a boy so i got him, then after reading about differnt sex snakes sharing tanks and every thing i went and got them both checked again by the first shop which is really good and they told me Dave was a Boy but Albert was a girl :S
and its all really stupid sorry had to say something to some one which knew about snkaes would they have been ok in thesame tank co-habitting or not????? |

Agreed, most people will be more likely to buy a second, sometimes even a third animal if they are told they don't need a second or third setup, sadly, that means they find out too late and then need to buy it all. |

for a female to be popped or probed as male............i just hope they didn't do her any damage! males to be incorrectly sexed as females is more common
shops tend to cohabit reps and take the risk so they can hold more stock..............providing their 'stock' doesn't eat other 'stock'!
reps are often sold on before the stress of cohabiting really starts to affect them adversely
and from a shop's point of view it's easier to sell somebody a 2nd snake than a 2nd snake and ANOTHER full set-up to house it - unless they think the customer has money to burn lol |

That's just the breeding point of view, there are a few other good reasons too, but this is the main opposite sex one, whilst the others also apply, they also apply to same sex cohabitting too. |

Just to add, which may be pointless as you have a second viv, but its quite nice to know why, rather than 'just dont'! Male corns, and females sometimes, can be physically mature enough to be fertile and produce viable clutches, however, 9 times out of 10 they are physically too small, they do not have the bodily resources to produce and ,maintain eggs. They tend to use all their resources to reproduce, kinda natures safety net so to speak.
As this whole process can take 6 weeks or so, the chances are she won't eat for most of that, so she can't be fed up for it, this can kill them, really quite easily!!
Once the eggs are formed, and the female has used all her energy to create and maintain the eggs, she then may struggle to lay them, lack of energy and loads of squeezing don't work well together, she then gets egg bound, mostly, and I put my neck out a bit here, people who get into this situation don't know any different, and are not expecting eggs, so don't tend to know about being egg bound, and unless caught early enough, its 100% fatal.
So there you go, that's why! |

I had two opposite sexes together for years, the male didn't care but the girl hated it. Now hey are separated she feels much better. |

I also like the name pearl, but as above, they need to be seperated as soon as. Pearl sounds far too young to breed and once the male his puberty its a sure thing that they will. It could be potentially fatal for the female. |

Sounds like they're too young to breed, but I don't know if a male being with a female can bring that instinct on early? It's best to get them separated ASAP just to keep the risk down =]
I think Pearl would be a lovely name for her btw. |

i got Dave 4 months ago and the shop didnt say how old he was and the same with pearl but they are 2ft4 :) I dunno if length helps or any thing :) x |

Aww - so you've got an Alberta!
I believe it can happen that way with probing - young snakes will often tense themselves so that the probe can't be used accurately - can't blame the snake.
It must be quite a shock, but you will still love Alberta just as much. You have two really beautiful snakes. |
