Posted - 06/08/2010 : 13:24:11 Can't wait until tomorrow, it will be our first real chance to handle Flakes, So looking forward to it. Any advice on the best way, should we let him/her come out on his own or offer a hand and see if he is interested. Once we have handled Flakes for a bit we will offer a pinkie, then another 48hours of leaving I think? |

Posted - 16/08/2010 : 08:59:19 Thanks all, I've been told that Flakes is a Carolina/normal. Had quiet a few handlings now, and I can even get him/her out the Faun by myself. I was so worried of hurting Flakes. Next feed tomorrow, Tuesday which will be 6 days from the last feed. Looking at the notes on feed dates and shed dates Flakes will is due to shed around the 20th August any advice? (I will put this onto the forum in its own post) Once again thanks you all so much for your kind remarks and very very helpful advice. |

Posted - 14/08/2010 : 17:22:56 Yes, my youngest corn snake is identical in colouring to Flakes and I bought her/him as a Miami, but I've seen them described as normals and Carolinas. Confusing! |

Posted - 14/08/2010 : 17:18:35 Hi lovely snake. Can i ask what type he is as his colouring is almost exactly the same as mine. Fluffy is my first snake and pet shop i got him from just had him labelled as a "miami". Thanks Karen |

Posted - 14/08/2010 : 06:21:54 Have been away from the forum for a while so havent had the chance to say hi yet. Flakes is gorgeous and your first handling session went brilliantly....you obviously have a very laid back snake and its attitude will have a lot to do with how you are when you handle it, if you are feeling calm and confident then it is less likely to get spooked and be jumpy....so well done.
And I think your daughter is amazing ! I dont know very many 2yrs old who would have coped with handling Flake the way she did and would understand and want to learn the way she does. She is going to gain so much from having Flake....and Flake is blessed to have her as its owner !
Unfortunately you have fallen victim to what a lot of us have found....that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
You have a beautiful snake....and a beautiful daughter ....and you have joined a forum full of the best people, strange ones !!

Posted - 12/08/2010 : 16:37:47 Thanks for letting us know, really really pleased to have all you experts on hand! We will change to every 6 days. I expect your son gets so much from handling his snakes too. I expect you have had the same remarks as us though, of "Why do you want a snake, they are horrible" and "You must be strange wanting a snake"! |

Posted - 11/08/2010 : 16:13:58 My seven year old autistic son loves handling his snakes. However you are feeding him too often. Every 5 days would be considered by some to be too frequent every three days is excessive and snakes can take up to several days to digest a meal so you are not giving his digestive system chance to catch up. I have been feeding my Xena every 5 days to help her catch up a bit as she didnt eat for the first seven months of her life and as a result was very under developed. This now is not the case as she is now built like a python so I have slowed her down to every six for a couple of weeks then eventually every seven days. I know you are sposed to feed hatchies more often than adults but every three days seems a bit excessive to me personally.
Cheers

Posted - 11/08/2010 : 15:08:17 So the snake was your daughter's idea? I'm impressed. And she looks very competent for her age ... I think so many children are underestimated, and so many parents automatically forbid things like snakes and creepy crawlies; it's such a shame. A child (obviously properly supervised like your girl)learns so much from a pet like this - to say nothing of patience and compassion and sensitivity.
I thought the photos were very touching. |

Posted - 11/08/2010 : 12:19:23 Stacii, The shop we got Flakes from was feeding them every 3rd day, so we thought we would stick to this, but if advised by you we will change to every 5-7 days if this is best for Flakes. Please let us know, although I have only just read this and we did feed last night, which went very well again. Yes we know about the 48 hours of no handling.
B.A.T.S - It's what our daughter asked for, she has a real interest in all animals, and isn't even faised by the pinkies (we told her what they are too!!)She wanted either a snake or a rabbit, so went for the better option! When she handled Flakes for the first time she was so good, fully understanding to stay nice and quite and calm, not bad for a 2 1/2 year old! |

Posted - 10/08/2010 : 16:34:05 how often are you feeding her hun?
its just i notice you put the pics up yesterday and then mentioned feeding again today?
its reccomended that hatchies are fed 5-7 days apart and handling isnt recommended for 48 hours after feeding
sorry if i have misunderstood at all xx |
