Posted - 19/06/2010 : 12:20:35 isnt it funny how some people behave towards snakes. I have a few people who come here who shy away when I got them out as if they are going to bite them or something. It makes me snigger inside (know I shouldnt, slaps wrist) when people react like that towards Xena as she is weany. Colin fairplay as he is already a bit of a handful but xena is like a bootlace by comparison. I couldnt think of anything less scary lol |

Posted - 21/06/2010 : 08:05:19 Phobias, unfortunately, are terrible things that blight your life. Obviously I haven't got snake phobia but I do have another phobia, and it completely ruined my childhood and teenage years. (In my case, it's a fear of vomiting.) My mother DOES have snake phobia and although I don't understand it, I do respect it because I know how frightened she is and I know how BRAVE she is to even set foot in my house when there's three things in there that she is absolutely terrified of. I would NOT go into a house where I knew someone was being sick, so I know and admire how much effort it takes mum to be able to come to our house nowadays! I have offered to use my snakes (especially Luna, who is incredibly placid) to help her overcome her fear, but she doesn't even want to think about it at the moment. |

Posted - 21/06/2010 : 05:15:55 There are so many people who are afraid of snakes and it is sad that they have that bad reputation. I think, as Nazzle said, that is must be a learned behaviour. We have the same thing with my daughter and spiders. As a little one she used to be absolutely fine with all creepy crawlies....but once she got to about the age of 8 she became terrified of them (not helped by my OH chasing her around the house with them....supposedly to 'cure' her of her fears ). So it must have been something she picked up....or could it be that as we grow survival instincts kick in? '“There is evidence for evolutionary avoidance of dangerous animals like scorpions, snakes and spiders. These are atavistic fears, which are a throwback to earlier days.” Our wise ancestors avoided creepy-crawlies which might have delivered a nasty nip, leaving us with an evolutionary hangover whereby removing a harmless house spider from the bath requires nerves of steel.'
Found this article interesting - http://www.livescience.com/animals/080305-snakes-fear.html
I am very careful with anyone who has a fear of snakes who comes into my house. If they want me to cover the vivs I will and I certainly wont get the snakes out....although my OH always wants to be more proactive and get them to face their fears there and then. But using my method I have got a friend, who couldnt even watch snakes on tv, to be able to sit next to me while I have Kellog out. Her overriding desire though was to make sure that her fear was not passed on to her kids so she made a point of asking me to get Kellog out when she was over so the kids could see him and touch him. She started off at the far end of the room and has gradually got to where she is now. One of these days she will touch him....but in her own time.

Posted - 20/06/2010 : 10:32:42 MY family all love snakes, specially my Gran :D MY Godmother is petrified, she stayed over last xmas, and I had taken Sprockett down with me as we were staying for a while.
She was fine as long as Sprockett was in her Viv, but when I took her out, she screamed and hid in the kitchen. Sprockett jumped and hid down my top hehehehe, thus proving we scare them more than they scare us! hehehe
When she was still tiny, I had her out, and the doorbell went, so not thinking about it I answered the door. It was a Jehovah's witness, I have nothing against them personally, (my housemates got really irritated that they kept coming to our door tho) and sprockett came out to say hi, and he ran. No-one ever came back to our house.
Sprockett seemed to gain brownie points with everyone for that! |

Posted - 19/06/2010 : 21:53:00 My mum strokes my snakes like a cat but Venom does not mind and my mum was the person who bought me 2 of them so... My dad just thinks it's cruel to have snakes, he's never held any of mine.
My sister strangely loves them, she kissed one today XD my neighbour will not come in our house since we got snakes. My gran is scared of them, she doesn't mind looking at them but if they are out and near her it's a squeal. |

There are many times when cold callers have been round that I have wished I had one of the snakes out. The dogs just don't scare them off lol. I always warn people I have snakes when they come round. Most don't mind as long as they are kept in their vivs. One friend will not even be in the same room as them and now I'v got four in the house she says she isn't coming round at all lol. My sister didn't like them at all when I first got one, now she will have them on her and wants one of her own. The main reaction I get is 'Oh isn't it soft, like touching silk'. My biggest hate is my neighbour who seems to like stroking them as if they were dogs grr. I wouldn't mind a gentle finger stroke but a full hand stroke down from the neck does not go down well with them lol
dave (my grandad) does this, i don't get along with for reasons of my own, infact we hate each other, but thats a different story, whenever i ahve monty out my gran sometimes wants to touch him so sometimes dave trys to touch him, but he always goes for the head, then monty will pull away and he will still try to touch is head. i sometimes wish he would just learn that he hates being touched on the head, but someday he will learn the hard way lol |

Posted - 19/06/2010 : 16:11:03 My girlfriend used to hate snakes but now that she's seen me holding mine and knows they aren't slimy things she doesn't mind. I'm starting to think she's giving Elmo more attention than she gives me. See how she feels when I get a bci! |

Posted - 19/06/2010 : 14:24:51 It must be a learned behaviour to be scared of snakes, when I have a reception or year 1 class at work almost all are happy to touch everything we have (unless we have a silly adult who's acting scared). If I get a year 6 class or a group of secondary school kids, they tend to want to just look and act a lot more hysterically.
I must admit I'll touch everything from hissing roaches to phibs to reps, but I'm scared stiff of the birds and gerbils as I find them harder to predict. I've also developed a fear of dogs in recent years after having a few scary moments in quick sucession. One sneaky whippet nipped the back of my leg and although it didn't draw blood it really scared me as I hadn't even realised it was there. The other time I was hidden in the woods dressed in a bunny costume (don't ask) when a massive bull mastive came bounding in, skidded to a halt about a meter away from me and stood growling for what felt like about 10 minutes before its owner appeared to rescue me. Although I love dogs I know I often come in contact with dogs who are out of sight of their owners, and they really scare me. |

Posted - 19/06/2010 : 13:52:41 I wonder why people think snakes are wet and slimey? I'm not a spider fan, and would not be first in line to handle one, but I have no problem with snakes, beardies, geckos etc at all. I suppose it's each to his own... |

Posted - 19/06/2010 : 13:50:29 my gran is super scared off snake, well was, until i went and bought a snake, she always sed if i got a snake she would not step into the house, then i got one without telling her, she came and i told her, she was interested so had a look in the tank without me being there ( im 15 so she didn't trust me to be in the room even though i wouldn't ) now she will quite happily sit in the living room with him on me and sometimes will touch him. she did hate it though when he went missing. |

Posted - 19/06/2010 : 13:20:33 I have a mate who was terrified of snakes for years and now he handles Casper quite often.
But yeh it is pretty funny. My mums mate is really scared of them, when she knocks she makes sure no-one has a snake out before she comes in. She won't even look at them in their fauns. |

I have the stuffed pelt of a young caiman that I've been known to put into vivs to scare show people.
I do think the thing that people who are unsure of snakes are most surprised about is the fact they're NOT slimy. |
