Hi all,

We're finally getting to the stage where animals are hatching.. It always feels like forever getting to this point.

Anyway, I'll keep throwing some pipping and hatchling photos on here as we go through the season.

Starting with one of our projects for the year.

Here is some pipping and hatching from #1247 Hypo Lavender het Motley/Stripe X Diffused Caramel het Amel ph Hypo.

The female has proven to be het Hypo so that gives us normals and hypos to start our project off with.

These come from a really strong Lavender line so we're hoping this will be the start of our line breeding project for really bright peach colour Caramel Hypo Lavenders.

This morning we have the first pipping from clutch #1247 which is Hypo Diffused het Anery Charcoal ph Amel X Platinum het Amel.

So this promises to be a colourful clutch for sure. Everything that comes out will be at least Hypo and if the Amel proves in the Hypo Diffused male there could be all sorts of things pop out! Everything will also be het Diffused.

We finally have the next clutch hatching.

#1258 Het Amel Caramel Cinder Motley X Amber Motley.
This is really a test breeding to see if our theory about being able to see Cinder as a het works out. Of course 50% of these should be het Cinder.

A bit of a surprise for us in this one, we have got some Hypo and Hypo Motley out. This proves that our male het Amel Caramel Cinder Motley is also het Hypo. Not seen much in the way of caramel out yet. Half way through hatching I think.

Here are a couple of photos:

#1211 Anery het Amel Diffused Hypo Motley X Same

This is an interesting story.. The original parents for this clutch are a Snow Motley female that we have had for years and a Diffused Ghost with no hets that we had on breeding loan.
We got all Anery out of the clutch as expected.

We have bred them this year and only got this one small clutch from our two females unfortunately.

The interesting thing is that they turned out to be het Pied!

So we have Avalanche Motley Pied, Diffused Ghost Pied, Diffused Ghost Motley Pied and a Granite Pied. We really beat the odds with these few eggs.

We have never produced a Lava Motley or a Topaz Motley. In over 120+ eggs we have only ever produced one Topaz.. Nothing changes so far this year. Sometimes this hobby have be so frustrating :)

Wow. What beautiful, beautiful hatchlings. The one on the top of the 1211 pile is a jaw dropper! You breed some incredible looking animals. I know we shouldn't love animals just cos of the way they look, but it's hard not to with these stunners!

Could you explain some genetics to me quickly though. With the tessera clutch, how come they're not all tessera patterned? Is it because only one parent carried the gene so some are just little not tesseras, and the ones that are show their colour morph but via tessera? Will they be het tessera instea? Just trying to learn more :)

Reply author: Moppet
Replied on: 11/07/2012 17:53:57

I'm still pretty new to the genetics too, but as far as I understand it, Tessera is a dominant gene. Any hatchling which gets the tessera gene will look like a tessera. If they don't get the tessera gene, they look normal. If they're not all tessera patterned, it is probably because the tessera was not homozygous (had a tessera and a normal gene) so the normal hatchlings didn't get the tessera gene.

Just the way I understand it anyway, hopefully someone more experienced will correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, is that what homo means? Not just a visible morph, but one where there's a gene in each coach seat (I forget the proper term starting with A). Is that why offspring are only 50% het for a gene not showing in them, but showed in their parents showed then?

Some simple maths to try and get it straight in my head:

Homo Charcoal + Charcoal = babies with at least 1 charcoal gene for sure?

Hey thanks for the all the comments guys, apologies I've not been back on for a few days. We're knee deep in hatchlings here.

Tessera is dominant or co-dominant to normal unlike most other corn genes. This means that carrying one copy of the gene is enough to show the tessera pattern rather than needing two. So if you breed a Tessera with one copy of the gene (het but visual) to a snake not carrying the tessera gene you will get 50% normal and 50% tessera.

We don't think there is a super form of the Tessera gene, so Heterozygous (one copy) or Homozygous (two copies) look the same.

There is a lot still to undertand about Tessera!

#1238 Het Amel Anery Lava Charcoal X Het Amel Charcoal Lava

This is another one from the odd breeding that we have 2.3 from. This breeding should be Het Amel Charcoal Lava X Same but last year with this male we got Lava, Anery and no Charcoal. All very odd.

This one has hatched and yet more odd results! We can see Hypo, Amel and Anery and not a lot else.. So much for Charcoal and Lava :P

Some you win, some you lose. We'll need to do some proper targetting of breed testing next year to work out exactly what is going on with this project!

#1264 Het Caramel Lava Motley X Same

Some projects go well and some not so well - we have had mixed luck with these two girls over the last couple of years. This year we managed to get Topaz and Lava Motley which is a great outcome :D

#1266 Het Cinder Lava X PH Cinder Lava

Looks like our female has proven to be het Cinder but not het Lava. Not a bad outcome at all! The Cinders from his clutch are all showing a really nice Cinder pattern and the colouration is looking nice already. I'm pleased to see that the Cinder outcrossing hasn't diluted the pattern influence!

#1226 Pied het Hypo Amel X Cinder ph Diffused

This one has hatched too. The Cinder female has proven to be het Diffused which is really great :D

So we have some Normals and some Diffused from this pairing.

We have a couple of the males that have really extreme diffusion!
